THE LEDGER. Thurlow 3. Carter, EDITOR AND MANAGER. WEDNESDAY, NOVEMHRK 11, 1903. ?Mr. J. W. Hamel, of Kershaw, who was elected chairman of the executive committee of the South Carolina Temperance, Law and Order League projected at a meeting of citizens of the State held lr. Columbia last week, says id Mis paper] tho Kershaw Era: It has for its aim tho promotion of a better moral sentiment all over our State and proposes to undertake tho accomplishment of this end along quiet, practical, non-political and non-partisn lines and yet tho effort is to bo a determined and persevering one. It is to be expected that politicaus, who view matters wholly from a political standpoint, will look upon it with suspicion if not with absolute disfavor, and beforo leaving Columbia we heard expressions which indicate that it is already being regarded by some as a political organization; but those who have connected themselves with this movement are better qualified to speak with absolute correctness of the purpose ofthe'r hearts than others are to interpret them for them. It is to bo hoped that all who favor its anus and purposes will not bo content to simply give it their best wishes but that they will unite actively with it Jin the work. Certainly every citizen desires to see a bet tor condition of affairs throughout our State, and this movement appeals to them for reasons that it has only that end in view. The Hampton Monument. From the proceeds of the Hampton bazaar, after all expenses wore paid, over $500 was made for tho contribution to the monument to be erected to the i memory of Gen. Hampton. There i are yet some articles to be dis- < posed of during tho Christmas I holidays, and the proceeds of the ] bazaar will then be increased mas : terially. The bazaar has served the additional purpose of stimulating the interest in tho work of raising this fund, and it is hoped that nearly all tho necessary $10,000 will be in hand when the legislature meets. This can be done with ease by a concerted movement over the State.?The State. Constables Arrested in Charleston Bailed. There have been practically no developments in the matter of the dispensary constables arrested in Charleston Saturday. Grady and Iloy, the two men who were put in jail, were bailed yesterday in the sum of $5,000 each by Mr. T. Moultrie Mordecai of Charleston acting for a surety company which furnished bond. It is not thought that the other men will bo put in jail though they must go through the formal process of having bond signed in the sum indicated.
