THE LEDGER. I1 Thurlow 3. Oarlor, EDITOR AND MANAGER. ^???????? i WEDNESDAY, OOTOHF.K 14, ltHW. r,y^.p - ? Thu Vii'im of Airs. Ale i ton's Testimony in Tii I mail Trial. W. VV. Hall in Saturday's State: "One more word. In reviewing thi? trial, forever and f? rover the mind reverts to a picture. That picture was drawn by a w >nmn? a woman in black. Closer than all others savo the accidental companions of the slayer, iu the wisdom of Divine Providence, she was placed to (he slain. This in witness on either sido has denied. She has drawn the picture wit! lines no sharp that it will never wear from the minds of those who saw her on the stand, for it is graven, graven upon thorn. She ia looking at Mr. Gonzales, watchlag him 'with the view of speak* ing to him," to cutch his cyo.' He is almost abreast of the trio, 'another step' will plnco him upon its line, he is 'taking the step' sad his couutenanco is 'placid,' 'perfectly calm,' he seems 'ah soroed in his thoughts." The crack of the pistol and the picture vanishes! If vaprous fogs becloud the vision as troops of witnesses follow each other to the stand ? back to it and ever back to it, the mind of the spectator finds itself turning for relief and rest?backto the testimony of Mrs. Emiuu C. Alelton! " Mail Contracts to Let and Con tractors Must Re Residents. Ths bidding is limited to persons living within the delivery district offices supplied from routes on which proposals are Made who will agree, in the event of being awarded a contract, to lire on or near the route and give the service personal supervision. This, in effect, shuts out profess--! ional contractors who have here tofore mad? bids on a large number of routes and when awarded contracts sublet them at a lower rate per annum than was receiv 1 by them, frequently resulting ia poor service and many complaints from the public. Under the contracts which will be awarded, taking effect July 1, 1904. the free collection and the delivery of mail will bo made on almost all star routes, will give >1 service almost the equal ot regular rural delivery service, the only features omitted being registering letters and selling money orders by carriers on routes. The elimination of the professional contractor and the establishment of free box collection and deliver^ of mail on star routes baa been introduced through the wise administration of Hon. \Y. 8. Shalleoberger, second assistant postmaster general, who is making an enviablo record as a progressive and able official. Martin and supposed to have been intended for W. 11. Sellers. The whiskey was seized because it was be lieved that the government tax had not been paid and the South ern railway also lost a freight ear, which in dor the revenue department rules cm I>o confiscated along with the whiskey. It is probable that a seizure like this will almost put an end to the , blockade business, as the railroad companies do not care to lose , freight ears worth $2,500 each in the transportation of whiskey.
