C., announced the death of Mr. Hugh Broom, a prominent merchant of that place, and a brother of Mrs. J. 1*. Car lison of this place. Mr. and Mrs. Garrison were at his bodside when death came having gone up to VVaxhaw in answer to a message Wednesday that his condition was critical. Mr. Broom was about 35 years of age and loaves a widow and several chil dron ? Union services will be held in the Presbyterian church next Sunday night, conducted by lie v. W. H. Hodges. ? As soon us tho necessary steps can be taken the matter of granting the franchise will be submitted to the qualified voters as is now required by law. (Jlyburn, a native of Lancaster county, who moved with his family to Texas about 17 years ago, is here on a visit to his relatives ami many old friends. Ho is looking well, weighs 215 pounds, has no gray hairs, and looks almost as young as he did 17 years ago. lie has received many a hearty hand shake from tlio companions of his boyhood and young manhood da) s. He reports crops good arounu uis home, Mint, JLoxas, and says that his corn crop is the auost ho has mado since ho hatbeen in tho "Lone Star State." Mr. Joseph Clark, an aged and well known eiti/.en, died at his homo at this place last Wednesday, July 22d, alter an illness ol several weeks. Mr. Clark was ti native of the county, having been born iu the Pleasant Hill section in April 1825, and has lived in the county all his life. lie was admitted to the practice of law about 187". lie served as postmaster at this place for two terms. His* widow and four children, viz: Mr. W. G, Clark of this place, Mrs. S. C. Villeneuvo of Atlanta. Ga , Mrs. Gallic Green of Bishopville, and Mrs. ,1. W. ilamol ol Kershaw, survive him. Mr. Clark was a man of strong intellect and of generous iinpul see. He was industrious and t'ru gal and accumulated a nice pro perty which be disposed of l>^ will to his widow, and children He was a member of the Method ist church and the funeral service was conducted from his residenci by his pastor Rev. \V H Hodges at 9. a. m. Thursday morning after which the remains wore in tor red in the town cemetery wit! Masonic honors. Mr. Clark was one of the oldest masons in tin Stuto having been made a masor in August 1S47 ? nearly 50 year: ago.
