Ac.? tion Kxpected. 1 he comptroller general has 1 lately received several letters in regard to certain insurance com- \ panics doing business in this state ' without takingout any license as 1 required by law. So many of j j these complaints wore received that tins morning Comptroller General .Jones issued u lotter j quoting tho law, and stating his ^ niuM i>rt'uuion or ine same. The law, section 007, criminal ^ code, expressly states that any ^ one soliciting insurance business without the company first seeur mg a license, may he arrested 1 and brought before a magistrate 1 and fined ?100 for each time a policy has been solicited. This applies to individuals, and section 170s of the civil code states that the company itself may bo fined a sum not exceeding $1,000 nor less than $500 to be retained by Hie party suing. provided he holds a policy in the company. It is likely that summary proceedings will be instituted by citizens who have been swindled late* ly by wildcat companies. Confederate Certificate of Heath in Battle. Kock Hill Herald. Following is a copy of a certificate of death issued during the War between the States. It was shown its by R. A. Minter, a son of the dead soldier. Confederate States of America. I certify that the within named John Minter, a private of Capt. K. A. Crawford's, Co. K., 17th S. C. Vol., born in York Distiict, S. C., aged lib years, 5 feet 8 inches high, fair complexion, tilue eyes, light hair, and by occupation a farmer, was enlisted by Maj. Melton at Columbia, S. C., on the 20th dai of June, 1804, to serve for the war, and was killed by a sharpshooter near Petersburg on the 25th day of August, 1S04. The said John Minter novor received any pay, nor drew any clothing from the government. (liven at Petersburg on the 4th day of Jan. 1805. S. M. Wylie, Lt., Com'dg. Co. K., 17th S. C. V. Nothing can be learned of Jim Evans, however, although the country roundabout Norway had been thoroughly scoured for him. All was quiet in the town last evening and Mr. W. 11.
