The South Carolina College for Teachers. Although nearly approaching Its ccn-', i tenaial anniversary, the South. Carolina I College shows none of the decrepi?t?dei of old ge, but .rather increasing signs of vigorous life. A new departure of great Importance to the College and to the State has just been Inaugurated. For some years the (College has had a department of pedagogy, for the training of teachers; hut last winter, for the tlrst time, the legislature created a number of endowed normal sehohirshijMj, one for each county. It is the intention of the Trustees and Faculty to set these scholarships upon a high plane, and to seek thereby to qualify superior young men for jxwltions of leadership and Influence in our public schools. However largely women may he employed as feat hers, the work of , superintendence, direction and control must continue to be most largely In the hands of the men; and it is to supply these teachers of leadership and ini fluence. In the community as well its in the schools, that the College will chleily 1 aim, through those scholarships. Hence, no young man under nineteen years of l age will be eligible, and preference will be given to those applicants who have already taught with success for at least one year. A apodal and technical course of , study has been established, on a high yet practical plane; and It Is intended that this department Ahall be worthlV entitled to be called a "College for ' Teachers." All the worir will tlnctlvely normal, and apart from the I regular College classes. The Trustees 1 and Faculty feel sure that In preparing a body of strong and well equipped I men teachers the College wiU aid In supplying one of the most important needs of the State. They hope, ahto, that this work, in its success and its results, may meet with such public approval as to lead hereafter to its still further enlargement. Circulars have been Issued giving the details of regulations and course of study. The present session, now nearly ended, has been very encouraging. Noi a ripple has disturbed the internal peace of the College. The new Preoldent has won golden opinions, and has more than maintained the confidence and affection gained in his long service as professor. The friends of the College look hopefully forward to fho tinucd success and Increased usetyilnesa 1 utf this venerated Institution, which will soon enter upon its second century oi honorable history. o A.BTO""H IA.
