THE LRDwriR. Thcrlaw Carter, EDITOR AND MANAGER. SATLltDAY, MAY 10, 1003. -?The abnormal price of cotton, forced by speculators after the staple has loft the hands of the pro <lucer, will injuriously affect the south. Had the price not been unusually* advanced northern and Knglish mills would manufacture freely throughout the summer, and the opening of the next cotton season would have found a small supply of old cotton on hand. A largo surplus, likely to result from tho curtailment of manufacture, will be the excuse for hammering prices when the new crop is offered for sale. With fair con* simiolion of cotton dorinc tins year there should bo demand for 11,000,000 billcs of the next croj. al prices not below s.t cents, 'l'lie State. ? Iloyt Hayes, the young farmer who is chili god with the murder of his wife, Lulu Hayes, on their farm near Walhalla, was admitted bail in the sum of $'2,000 by Chief Justico l\ipo in this city yesterday. Attorney It. T. ?Jaynes of the law firm of Jaynos W Shelor of Walhalla annenrcd for II' tho defendant and the State was represented by Attorney General U. X. Gunter. Tho chief justice declined to hear any lengthy argument on the case, stating that he was convinced on the statement of fact that this case was one whore tho dofeudant should bo admitted to bad. Tho crime has shaken tho community in which it was to tho very eentne. The young woman who was murdered or who committed suicide, as the case may he, was in a delicate condition, and the defense will lie that she kilted herself while under a temporary aberration of mind. Advices received here state that the whole community is very much excited and public sentiment is about evenly devilled for and against the accused, who is only 20 years of age. Young Man Probably Fatally Wounded in an Attempt to Keep Two Other Men From Fighting. Florence, May 14.?Mr. Ribart .1. Whilton, a popular young Uo?it Line engineer of this eity, ivus shot and probably fatally . wounded hy Air. K A. Hut ley, a young sewing machine agent of Leo County, at a house in the northern part of the city, about 11 j'clock last night. The story of :be tragedy is almost unobtainable, owing to the fact that all ' i present refrain from giving an lccount of what happened. From what could be gathered, however, it seems as if a dispute was going on and young Whitton tried to net as peacemaker, and was attempting to keep Hatley and another young man from getting into a personal encounter, when ^ Hatley drew a pistol and fired. The hall pierced the lung WhitLon was carried home, and the physicians fear that he cannot re \ cover. Hatley was arrested and is now in jail awaiting tho result ^ of his pistol shot.
