Dr. Neison on Cause t." Staggers.; I Fatal Disease ?f the Xerron*System in Horses AI tray a A?*ociuted With Mouldy Food, Bad Water and Uncleanly Surroundings. Special to The State Clenison. Knli. 'J4 l)r \**mn. tho State veterinarian, is receiving to many letters from various sections in reference to staggers that he has found it impossible to answer them all. The following letter will ho of interest to many throughout the State: To the editor of Tho State. Ab it is quite out of tho question for nio to give personal answers to all of the letters letters from citizens of South Crrolina and Georgia regarding a horse disease commonly referred to as staggers, 1 take this method of saying to those concerned that moro and more cases appear ovorjr vrcok, and just at this season when horses and mules are so much io demand for farm work it becomes a serious question. The loss in South Carolina from this disease during the past tear are estimated at about $10,000, and it is prevalent in 1 Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina and Kansas' I had dia^m etl the disease as cerebro spinal meningitis nearly a year ago but many of the cu&os did not seem typical of this disease I ha", e recently forwarded to ttie bureau of uuimul industry at Washington six of the brains taken from hut si s that had die I of this disease. A partial report has been received 1 and the disease proves to he ecu - * bro-Kpitial meningitis, or loueoncephalitis. This is a disease of the nervous system, affecting chiefly the I.rain . and its covering membranes. Most of the brains taken out re-; cently huve been congested, some i blood sernm around the brain, and in either the right or left half of the upper portion of the bruin (cerebrum) there hue been found r large urea of degeneration. This cannot bo seen on tho surface, but if the brain is cut open what appears to be u large ulcer is found in the substance of tho brain. This is the principal po sion and is responsible for most all of the ill symptoms. The symptoms are the same as those of nearly nil the other forms of so called "staggers;" and death generally follows in one fc or twe days if not very soon after the diseaso is noticed. * The cause of the disease is not well undi 1- k k. stood, but it is always associated with mouldy food, bad water ur.d unclean surroundings. The remedy is to avoid the ' cause, use only the best food, pure wuter and keep the animals under the best condition us to cleanliness. In one case 1 saw where a number , of mules had died, the onl\ bad I environment L could tind was that 1 i a lot of rank weeds had been < luowid down, around th? bun . and left there to decay during a ? rainy Hpell of weather. Medical treatment is almost melons, rs ti e ' lotions of the brain have aliea ly occurred when the symptoms arc noticed and cur? i> generally out of tlie; question when so much of the brain has become deeayed Cold fchower baths to the heads doses of one ounce of aloes, or four ounce8 of whi-Uev may re liove the sy nptoms for a while. When the disease appears t h an, disinfect and whitewash the b.u n and do not use the siuii where a horse las died. It possible abandon lots and barns for two or th'cc month and provide quarters elsewhere for all horses kept on the piaee. (i. 10.
