A special from Lancaster, Jan. 22, to The News and Couircr says: It is refreshing to Rear of a public oflicial who is satisfied with his salary and declines to Klin in <, *? 1 i.:~ ?? luuioinrui IU UllVO Ills pay increased. County Treasurer VV. C. Canthen, whose exceptional efficiency has been noted in this correspondence, is such an officer. Mr. Cautben receive i a few days ago an urgent invitation to attend ix meeting of the county treasurers of the State, to bo bold in Columbia on tho 37th instant, the object, of which meet is to nsk the Legislature to increase tho salaries of such officers. Your correspondent asked him for his reasons and he reluctantly showed his reply to the invitation i received. The liberty is taken of I giving it publicity, as it is of gen- ' cral interest and well worthy of ' consideration. Hero it is: "Replying to yours of recent date iu referonco to the county treasurers1 meeting in Columbia, tho 27th instant, it will be impossible for 1110 to attend. 1 am not able to go, nor have I tho ' time just now if I were. Besides, I am not in sympathy with tho object of thv meeting. I do not believe that the county treasurer should receive a higher salary than do tho county auditor. It is true that wo have to give a heavy bond and that we have much responsibility resting5* upon us, but having worked through and through with the auditor hero for the past four years, I am familiar with what he haw to do, and I do not believe that 1 should receive a larger salary. than he does. I therefore would be out of place at said meeting. Very truly yours. W. C. Cauthcn, Treasurer Lancaster County." A Striking Exception. The Lancaster correspondent of the News and Courier in Monday's issue tells of the thriftiness of Muck Bl&ckmon, a well-to-do colored citizen of this county, _ I ? ' * wnomoiners ot ins race woulr. do well to putter a after: Muck siarted to farm by himself just twenty yoars ago without a dollur in the world. Today ho o\vns three plantations, owos no man a dollar and has money at interest. Ilis success is due to "hard work, well directed closa economy and fair dealing with his neighbors, both white nnd biack. Mack has all of his lauds rented except a two-horse farm, which h? works himself. That ho is a tine farmer is shown by his crop gf last year. He made on his own farm 23 bales of cotton, over 500 bushels of corn, 100 bushels i.l potatoes,* a large cjuantity of molasses and a fine crop of small grain. He now has on hand several hundred gallons of molasses, but much of this was made by a public cano mill, which he runs. Me also has 600 pounds of pork salted down and has more hogs to kill. He has not sold a bale of last year's crop of cotton. Not needing tho money he is holding the staplo for higher prices. During bad weathor when his mules cannot be employed on the farm Mack hauls wood-to market. He has already sold thus far this season 120 cords of wood. ?Manager Wanted!
