New York, Dec. 20.--In a firs which shot through five factories, in the river front district, this morning,three firemen were killed, two were badly injured and more than $400,000 damage was done. He does not want all the dogs annihilated. lie thinks that a dog is a goed thing; but he believes that a tax of $ 1.00 per head will thin out the dogs that arc no good without prejudice to such dogs as arc really worth keeping. He does not think that the tax should be more than $1.00 per bead; but siiggests that the proceeds should go to the public schools, being distributed in the same manner as J the poll tax is now distributed.? Miss Serena Isabel Turner, of Isle of Wight county, the murder of whoso father, some time ago by Andrew Carter Gilligan, create ed a sensation, was married yestarday in Washington to Mr. .Jonn W. Rison, Jr., a well known druggist of tbis city. The shooting of Mis^> Turner's father by A. (J. (Nick) Gillignn caused more interest in the state than any crime committed in \ ears. It was shown thut there ' hail been a sort of hoy and girl affair between Gilliguu and Miss rurner. , Gilligan was a son of Mr. I'lirnor's overseer and the latter lid not deem him a suitable match for his daughter. Despite his, Gilligun was found on the < itemises one night by Mr. Turn- 1 jr, and shot the latter, killing rim He was sentenced to serve 18 years in the penitentiary after i fiercely contested trial. Sol Dun, "Certain of Heaven" if Hanged, Yet Asks for Life Imprisonment and Laughs Heartily. Special to The State. Augusta, Ga., Dec. 31.?The notion for a new trial in tho case at Tom Hardy, sentenced to hang lay after tomorrow for murder, was overruled yesterday afternoon by Judge Brinson and il certainly looked like . immediate death was staring the convict in the face. This morning, however, a stay of execution was granted and the case will be taken to the supreme court asking for a now trial on the ground that -trial was forced before the attorneys for the defenso had time to make out their case. In the case of Sol. Dun, <he negro convicted of the murder of a white man by the name of Springs, and which was taken to tbe supreme court, the execution will occur Friday week, the Ttb. This morning Dun sent for Attorney Franklin aDd asked him to get the sentence commuted to life imprisonment. During the conversation Dun said he had rather go to the penitentiary for life than go to hoaveu. The following conversation took place between the condemned negro and the attorney: "Sol, in case you can't get your sentence changed, are you prepared to die?" "Yes, sir; I am." "Do you thing you would go to heaven if you died!" "Yes, sir, I am sure I would go to heaven." . . f \ j i i ? i "liut, ooi, you would ratner go io lie penitentiary for life than to go to heaven?" "I shore hud, boss; I shore had." As the negro mude this reply he laughed heartily for fully three minutes, the first time even a smile lius crossed his countenunco for 60 days. Sec. 1 That an annual tax of One Dollar is hereby assessed and levied against the owner of each dog or bitch kept within the corporate limits of said town to be paid on or before Jnny. 1st 1903, and on or before January 1st of each and every year thereafter. That upon payment of said tax, the owner of any dog or bitch shall be furnished by the Chief of Police with n tag which shall be immediately placed upon said dog or bitch by being attached to a collar.
