Spartanburg, Nov. 18 ?Shorty after midnight this morning a vhito man named Mack Blanton, in operative in the Whitney coton mills, who was returning lome from a visit to this city net with an unpleusant adventure lirectly after he left the city subirbs and was walking along the jcw road to Whitney. Accotdng to bis statements, be was held ip by three uegro men. Two of he party gathered him on each tide of the body and held his arms eon re, while the third "went hrougb him," taking from his lockets $35 in cash and a watch sullied at two or three dollars, dlanton came to the city and noitied the authorities. While on he street here he saw a negro nan with a watch chain and charm iffering it for sale?it was his own ?hain and watch charm. He askk1 the negro to let him see it, and obtaining possession of the trink3ts, put them in his pocket and went off in search of a policeman. When he returned the negro could lot be found. Mrs. Sanders turned the firearm over to the negro, after taking a critical survey of his appearance and apparel. He represented himself as Jim Clippard, a negro who works at Whitney, and who is reliable and industrious. Wben Mr. Sanders returned home from his work in the mill a short time afterwards he was surprised to learn of the incident. Clippard was found, and he knew nothing whatever of the affair. A. negro named Tom Kelley was arrested, answering in appearance and dress to Clippard. .He was beiog tried in Magistrate Kir by's court this afternoon for the offense when a message was received by the magistrate from responsible white persons at Whitney that the miss ing gun was located at tho house )f Tom Coleman, a negro who lives at Whitney. A constable was at once dispatched to arrest doleman and recover the gun. The court proceedings were suspended until tomorrow morning.
