Stolen Mn u Recovered and Tliief Captured Oq Thursday night last a mule was fctolen from Mr. Thomas Jones in Cedar CreeK township. The mule was in charge of A'm. McQuilla, col., a cropper on Mr. Jones' place. Messages were sent to all the adjacent towns on Friday giving a description of the mule, and on Saturday notice was received that the mule had been found at llidgcway, in Fairfield county, and that Jesse Cunningham, a negro, was trying to sell it. Cunningham was ai rested and on Monday Sheriff Hunter went ior mm and ne is now ne< hind the bars in the Lancaster jail. Ho acknowledged his guilt and implicated McQuilla as aiding and abetting in the theft, claiming that McQuilla had gotten him to take tho mule off and sell it for him. McQuilla was arrested and it alao in jail. The mule was recovered and has been returned to Mr. Jones. In Magistrate Casket's Court. ?Aaron McMullen, col., plead guilty to obtaining goods under false pretences and was sentenced to pay a fine of 115. or spend 30 days on the gang. lie was taken to the gang Saturday. ? Azariab Baxter, col., was found guilty of violating contract and is spending 30 days on the gang in lieu of paying a tine of $25. ?Alex love, for disorderly conduct, paid a tine of $5. in lieu of spending thirty days on the ?The three negroes charged with riotous conduct on the publie highway near Elgin compro-. mised the case against them and paid the costs which amounted to $12. Ross-Ewart Nuptials Today. Iter. VV. C. Ewart will leave on the early morning train today for Columbia, where at 5 p. m., in the A. R P. church he will be united in the holy bonds of wedlock to Miss Rachel Alice Ross, the Rev. J. P. Knox officiating. They will take tho train for Lancaster immediately after tho cer. emony, arriving here at 0 o'clock, p. j). The ladies of his Lancas tor congregation have arranged and will give Rev. Mr. Ewart and bis bride an elegant reception at the parsonage on their arrival. Judge Ira B. Jones and wife, Dr. M. P. Crawford, Mr. J. E. Taylor, Mr. W. B. Knight and daughtei, Miss Clarice Knight, and Mrs. J. P. King will accompany Mr. Ewart to Columbia and attend the marriage, returning with the bridal party tonight. Basket Supper at Tabernacle. The students and teachers of Tabernacle High School have decided to have a basket supper on Saturday night Nov. 22d. The object is to get money to seat the school with patent desks The public are cordially invited to attend. Let all the young men come with the expectation of buying a basket and of having the op portunity of eating tbo contents of it with a pretty girl. The girls will see that the baskets are well filled. Come one come all. He. member the date, Saturday the 22nd of November. The school has an enrollment of 103. The patrons have a new building under way and the. whole community want to see it well seated. The students deservo some attention from the outside. They have two large literary societies of about 25 members each ancTarg doing good work. Let * us all join in a good cause. [For The Ledger. Two Loving Hearts. The marriage of Miss Bessie Perry am I Mr. Harry H ines, of this place, which Las already been mentioned in the county papers, was a quiet, but most impressive event, and the contracting par* ties are to bo congratulated iu so successfully winning each other. Their homes, in Lancaster, aro of a short duration, but sulliciently long for every one to find out the charms of each and to know and t) appreciate their true value. The floral decorations wero simple but lovely, as kind and thoughtful friends sent in some of their choicest flowers for the occasion. To tho family a nice dinner was soived at eloven o'clock, after which time, tho invited guests arrived to witness the nuptial cere . mony, which took place promptly at twelve. The bride groom wore a Prince Albert suit of handsome broad cloth and the bride a simple but lovely white organdy with ribbons to match. All who know them can well imagine tho scene presented, and the pureness of the bride's attire and tho beautiful chrysanthemums she carried are true emblems of the sweetness and pureness of her character. The presents were pretty and costly and will over lie as pleasant remembrances of that eventful day in their cozy little home. After tho ceremony and nnny congratulations, the bride's dress was changed for that of a hand' some black traveling suit and in company with a few of tho invited friends and relatives, went to the depot to board the 2 o'clock train for the home of the bridegroom in North Carolina. Their destination was reached at nine o'clock the following morning, where an excellent wedding breakfast was served and loving friends wore waning 10 give uieni a hearty re ceplion. Did Augusta Negroes Kill The Atkinsons' Dan Hardy Has Made Some Sus picious Statements Concern ing the Republican Church Assassination. Special to The State Augusta, Nov. 10.?Dai Hardy, one of the three negro?: held on the chargo of murder made a statement this afternooi which leads to the belief that they are a gang of murderous robbers responsible for crimes about Au gusta-for some years past. Tom Ilardy, one of the gang, was convicted of murdor Satur day night and is now waiting sen tence of death. Han made n statement this afternoon that hi knew who killed Mrs. J. O. At kinson, near Republican church Kdgefield county, in 1898. H< said two negroes lynched neai the scene were innocent. It wil be remembered that Atkinsoi and his wife were driving honx from Augusta when three negroei fired into their buggy about dart from the side of the roadway. A Peculiar Case. How Lancaster Will Get a New Clerk of Court by Appoint* moot. j * Just two (lays before tbe genoral election recently held Mr. W. j S. L. Porter, the clerk of court of | Lancaster county, died. This j raised a neat proposition under j the law. The governor is required to till such vacancies by appointment. Had be rushed in boforo the official notice of death and appointed some one the ap1 pointee would have held the office . only two days. But the official I notice did not en mo until duy, anil now that the vacancy must be filled, the appointment made will hold till the next general election two years hence. It was a case in which a matter of hours only made a big difference in the carrying out of the provisions of the.law. He Awaits Instructions as to the Manner of Distributing $10,000 Among Swindled Women. Charlotte Observer. "1 don't know how 1 am to distribute that $10,000 among those women who were swindled by the Cherry Tree Company," said Col. H. C. Cowles, of Statesville, yesterday.
