C., S|tecial to Atlanta Constitution. With a right swing on the point ot the jaw Carrie Natirfn knocked out a cadet from the South Carolina Military Academy this morning simply because he was smoking a cigarette. The cadet was walking in King street with several companions. He first saw the woman as she made a pass at him, and the blow wus so quick that he cor Id neither defend himself nor dodge. The blow lundod squarely and the cadet staggered. He was falling to the ground when his friend* seized him. Infuriated ut the attack the cadet recovered his balance and was . preparing to strike back. Mra. ' Nation lifted her left arm before her face and drew back her right. , "Come right on," she shouted, j "I am Carrio Nation." > The cadet, who subsequently re ' fused to give his name, did not attempt to do the woman any harm after he had learned her identity. He took the assault I good naturedly and allowed the | Kansas whirlwind to talk to him about the evil of cigarette smoking. I The trouble attracted a large crowd. Mrs. Nation led the throng to a corner grocery store, : which she entered. She was tryl ing to walk into the room at the ! rear where liquor is sold when - she was stopped. When the pro* r prietor said that he did not sell liquor, bystanders claimed that she called him a liar. The keeper of a blind tiger ' named Dugan met Mrs. Nation j and after eating dinner with her in a restaurant escorted her to several blind tigers. At first Mrs. Nation was inclined to make raerry at the expense of the fixtures, but she desisted, preferring, she ' said, to talk. In many of the tigers bouncers were stationed by I tho door to throw Mrs. Nation . out in case she tried to make i trouble. Good Natnred Carrie. . > She Takes Pleasantly the Taunt9 ( and Gibes of the Boys, t Carrie Nation is certainly a good natured woman. She smiles and laughs at the gibes and jests of the boys, and playfully resents their familiar slap on the shoulder as they say. "That's good, Carrie, give it to ,em." At the tame time she makes good this I sort of thing financially and disi poses of hundreds of little hatchets to be worn like coat lapel buttons. Last night when the crowd on ! Main street was dense she and her manager walked up, the Utter announcing: "Carrie Nation, ladies and gentleman," and everybody made way for her so that they could see the woman of no tional notoriety. She was tol lowed by a crowd of boys, yelling, "Have you seen Carrie? you better hurry," but she smiled at all this and told everybidy to come around ana near her at tho tabernacle.?Columbia Record.
