Lumens, Sept. 21.?Recently several farmers in this county have hen swindled out of sums of money ranging from $10 to $50 hy two well-dressed fellows of gentlemanly hearing who represented themselves as agents of a well-known supply company of Chicigo. H. M. Smith, a good citizen of High Point, has sworn out a warrant for the men and the warrant has heen placed in the hands of the sheriff. Mr. Smith folds a iA-ueipi n?r *>*o signed l?y IJ F dones. Ho was duped into payuig tins on tho promise that a high grade buggy would he shipped to him within 12 days, considerably under tho listed prices in the catalogue, etc , which they exhibited. At the expiration of the 12 days, no buggy having come, Mr. Smith proceeded to investigate the matter and to his astonishment upon wiring tho alleged Chicago house he was advised that they employed no traveling agents and tho men were im posters and frauds. In the meantime information reaches here from a point in Georgia that two men answering Jonos' and his companion's description had been operating the same scheme there and are badly wanted by the authorities in that State also. They travel by private conveyance and crossed this country two weeks ago, traveling eastwaid. It is said that tho same parties worked the farmers of uppet Richland county and the Dutch fork of Lexington county and that warrants have been sworn out in those counties for the arrestol the scamps. Before the execution was accoin plished Hernia made a desperate fight. When two deputy sheriffs approached him to strap Ins arms he tore off two brass brackets on the side of his cell and getting intc the corridor leaped over the partition. He then tore off a piece of lead pipe and shouted that he would brain any one that came near him. The hose was turned on hitn and as Hernia put up hie hands to ward off the water from striking him in the face a deputy sheriff leaped over and grabbed the hands of the murderer in which was the lead pipe. Hernia was finally overpowered and severely strapped. He was then placed in a chair and carried to the gallows. The drop was sprung and Hernia died of strangulation.
