THE LEDGER. rhurlow Carter, EDITOR AND MANAGER. SATURDAY AUGUST ljfc 1902. [For !'ho Lodger. V * N WYCK ITEMS. \lr. E : Optimo*, your news g uli'T r Vm Wyck has boon very i>u?y wrestl'iog with farm work and other business, and has neglected \ an Wyck news items for a long while. Hut we have a vacation now from tho farm and other things and will use some of our spare moments in giving your readers an account of the happenings around Van Wyck. Our farmers are about through with the culiivation of their crops, and are enjoying a much needed rest from their summer's toil before they are called upon to gather in the golden harvest. A spirit of good will and contentment seems to prevail. Politics have not disturbed our tranquility. Farmers are wearing smiles and feel happy over the prospects for an abundant harvest, although the outlook is not the best. Cotton promises about a two third crop and if wo do not get rain soon our calculations will be placed on a half crop as the weed is small and shedding its fruit profusely. Corn is about an average crop. The early planting is about made and the late planting growing nicely, but needing rain, and its yield de panels upoa everything; being favorable for it the balance of the seuson. Much of this late crop was planted the early part of July. Candidates had been rather scarce in this pait of the county but as the county cuuvaas is on ? we have them in full force this week. They are a nico, clever -ir tnen^nd * > >ig *-? wiui you l a ' x, t i e c ean ] ?: *.i y i i?>p ! ?. i r n m e .k i-?i u no me .'fti.'i; >u.e, or J. w llva t, for count! ?upet visi?r. Mr. Hyatt is a gentleman, iuov competent for the office to which he uspires. He is a broad minded, practical man and knows the needs of our people. He is an expert bridge builder, a judge of lumber and knows hew our public roads should be made, and if elected supervisor, we are satisfied we shall have better roads. He is fully competent to take charge of the county's finances and other matters belonging to the office of supervisor. He has the endorsement of his home people and they would like for the voters of Lancaster county to inquire into the merits and fitness of Mr. Hyatt for supervisor and if found satis* factory to give him their support. We are satisfied the county's af fairs will he safe in his hands. The annual pic-nic of Cedar Camp, W. O. W. of Van Wyck, August the 6th was largely attended, and a decided success. 1 The weather was fine and the . Camp had free refreshments on the grounds?ice lemonade, fine melons, cigars and candies for the public. The table was ladened ' and fairly groaned under the , weight of the abundance of the , good things for which our couu- | try is famed. All were satisfied ( and many baskets of fragments taken up. ( The congressional candidates of y the fifth district were invited to , he present and make addresses but f were provonted by another ap N pointment. The attendance was very good and the children acquitted themselves well, showing the careful training of tho committee assisted by the pastor and Prof. T. K. Thompson, Van Wyek's hustling teacher. Our genial merchant Mr. J. H. McManus has been wearing mammoth, latitudinal smiles since last Saturday. This can bo explained by tho arrival of a tine daughter at bis home. Van Wyck community had an unromantic marriage last Sunday morning, the contracting parties being Mr. Eddie Crenshaw and Miss Octavia Starnes. The ceremony was performed by Mr. J. J. Perry, Notary Public, at his home. On tho part of the groom it was a kind of "Gretna Green" affair who failed to get a welcome reception, a shower of rice or the well wishes of his displeased pa-, rents. Among Van Wyck's recent visitors, was Mr. James Sims, a son of the late Col. R. M. Sims, who was horn in the Wnxhaws, but who is now living in California. Mr. Sims has won for himself a reputation as an attorney and politician in the Golden State and , was very favorably spoken of a9 the Democratic nominee for governor of California. He was the guest of his kinsman, Mr. R. H. e> ' i Massey and family. Mr. Willie Lake of Hot Springs Ark., a son of the late Keiupoi and Bessie Campbell Lnke has been visiting relatives at Van Wyck and VVuxhaw. Mr. Arndt and M iss Pom pie Till man of Lancaster took 111 children's day, last Sunda" at Van Wyck church and ** visited friends. Mr. George W. Crenshaw of Five Forks Ga., is visiting his father's family, Mr. J. C. Crenshaw. He has been on the sick list and is at his father's home recuperating. Drs. J. Douglas Nisbet of New York and Verne Nisbet of Philadelphia, after several weeks rest at their mother's beautiful coun^ try home at Indian Ferry, returned to their respective homes, much refreshed by our Sunny /lit.. V - luime ana pure southern atmosphere. Rev. J. E. Strickland is engag- , ed in carrying on a protracted meeting at Belair this week which ( began last Sunday afternoon. Van Wyck school opened last Monday with thirty four pupils? Prof. T. It. Thompson in charge. Van Wyck was visited Thurs day morning by the hardest rain of tho soasou with some hail but J not enough to do any damage. The rain was very much needed ^ and will do much good. t The county candidates were J with us last Wednesday and were ( well received by the people. 1 There were about one hundred j *nd fifty Gut to hear them. < imong this number a gdod many t adies w hich added to the pleasure t )f the occasion. * tri xnere was no variance on issues lisciiMjed and no personalities lsed by the candidates.
