The drought prevailing in the irevious week from Virginia and ho Carolina's westward to Arkan* as has been largely broken, the ains, being excessively heavy >ver the western part of tho rep on named. Drought, however, jontinues 111 portions of lower _)hio valley, the Carolinas and lorthern Georgia. As* a whole, corn has made ex. client progress in tho principal jorn producing States and an unisually tine crop is promised. In i small part of lower Ohio vol lev ind in southeastern Missouri, :entral and western Kansas, Tenlcsseo and Virginia a part of the 3rop, is, however suffering from drought. The central and eastern portions of the cotton belt have experienced more favorable weather and a very general improvement' in the condition of cotton is indicated, the rainfall of ** the week having largely relieved the drought. The Carolinus, portions of Georgia, Louisinu, and Missouri, however, continue to suffer from drought and shedding and rust are more or less extensively reported in the ccntial and eastern districts. In Alabama, Mississippi,Tonnoessee and Arkansas the rainfall has been generally ample, and excessive in the last named State where cotton has been beaten down to some extent. Central and northwestern Texas in common with Arkansas and the northern portions of Louisiana and Mississippi and weete.m Tennessee, received during the fore* part of the week from 2 to 10 inches of rain. In Taxes cotton is making heavy bush, and at a ?'ule continues to fruit satisfactorily, there is considerable complaint of sheddiog, boll worms and weevils especially in the lower portions of Brazos and Colorado valley. The latter part of the week was more favorable, and picking, which is in progress as far north as the lied river valley, with a continuation of the weather of the latter part of the week, will be general within ten days. llains havo benefited the tobacco crop in Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia and tho conditions hare been highly favorable for curing in the Carolines. Hail Storm in Pickens. Special to The State. Pickens, Aug. 5.?A destructive hail storm did damage to growing crops in the country lying in tho vicinity of Pickens court house last Monday afteruoon. The course of tho storm seems to have followed a line running from northwest to southeast and extending for a distance of about four miles, passing through tho town of Pickens. The damage cannot yet be estimated but many good farmers whose jrops are measured three and four horses each are apparently ruined. Grown cotton bolls were torn from the stalk and the heavy rains accompanying the atom washed them into piles or carried them off. Corn is almost strip ped, and withthose who felt the fullforco of (lie storm the outlook is indeed gloomy. ???m Mr. T. M.
