C., Mil*- IS, 1902. I lie rainfall fur the week was generally light, except in spot* over the southeastern oflrtfiftie^ and the Savnnuuh valley, where it wan copious, and of giout benefit t? crops, although it failed to thoroughly relieve tho drought at any point. There were also numerous but widely scattered showers on tho 7-8th over the entiro State, but they were local, partial, generally light, and eu iirriv uisutncient. In the Pee Doe sections tbo drought :s becoming serious. The week was favorable for farm work which made rapid progress. Planting operations are practically finished, except ou bottom lands that have been either too wet or too hard to cultivate. It is the exception this yoar to have poor stands of corn reported, and much less than the usual amount of replanting has been necessary owing to birds and worms. Corn has n healthy appearance, and is well cultivated, most of it having received its first and some its second working. As yet, the dry weather has not hurt corn to any appreciable extent. Cotton is up, or coming up, to form "very good" to "fairly good" stands over the whole State, with slight exceptions lim.ited to late plantings, where the ground is too dry for germination. XI..~U I l ' juuuu uas neon cDoppeci to stands, and considerable has been cultivated. The plants are sturdy and healthy in appearance. Wheat failed materially anil will be below average. It is heading and somo is turning color. Oats arc exceedingly variuble, but generally stand in need ot rain. Harvest has made slow progress. Truck aud sea-island cotton were benefitted by the rams uloug the coast There is an increased number of reports on peaches dropping. Sweet potato slips are being set out. Colorado beetles on white potatoes are more numerous and destructive than evci before known. Gardens, pastures and minor crops need a general, soaking rain. Ingersoll came to Washington from the west, his head tilled with legal lore anp infidelity, or it would be bettor to eall it agnosticism, ho encountered in one of the corridors of the Capitol an old Negro woman vigorously scrubbing the floor whon she heura anyone coming, aud when the footsteps died away busily reading her Bible. "He slipped up on her very quietly one morning, und taking her by surprise, with her Bible, he suid: "Mary do you.believe all you read theref" "I sutanly do," she replied; 'ebery word, Colonel Ingcraoil." "Do you believo that God made ninu out of dubt?" "Jn coaac 1 does." "Say, it happened to rain hard about that time, and the duet was go?o and there was nothing but mud?"
