Cain Ford, a Negro, Arrested on Suspicion and Nauov.lv ICs capo l^nehinu. Special to News and Courier. Kuvennl, Colleton County, April 22. -Cain Ford, colored, was arrested last night on suspi. eion of complicity in the murder of Mrs.W. A'. Jones, wife of section master Jones, of the Plant System Railway, and was toduy brought before Magistrate liehlin?r. Never have the people in this section been more aroused than they were today. About 150 persons were present at tho coroner's inquest over tho remains of the dead woman, and several times it seemed that the negro would bo taken from the otlicers and lynched. Hut cooler heads prevented this and Deputy Sheriff Aroett was allowed to carry the prisoner to jail at Wulterboro.? If the testimony against Ford had been at all positive he would have beon swung to a limb in a very few minutes. The object of the murder was clearly robbery. Mr. Jones, the section master had been paid off only a few days After the crime the trunks in the house were found broken open and the robbeis left with a pistol, razor and a gold watch and chain. Dr. ?J. D. Taylor in his testimony declared that Mrs. Jones was not assaulted. It is thought that Jim Hlack, a notorious negro in this community, is the murderer, and that Ford knows something of the crime.? One witness today testified that he saw Jim Hlack near the scene of the murder hurrying through the woods with a pistol. Deputy Sheriff Arnett and the citizens of the community will leave nothing undone to capture the guilty parI titfs. Mr. and Mrs. Jones were married one year ago yesterday, and i before the former started to his work in the morning he gave his wife a gold watch and chain. The section master is greatly wrought up over the horrible deed and is almost distracted with grief and excitement. A DOCTORS BAD PLIGHT "Two years ago, as a result of i a severo cold, I lost my voice," writes Dr. M. L. Sc.- t horough, of Hebron, Ohio, "then began an . obstinate cough. Every remedy known to me as a practicing physi* cian for 35 years, failed , and I . daily grew worse. Being urged to try Dr King's New Discovery for Consumption, Coughs and Colds, , I found quick relief, and for last ten days have felt better than for . two years." Cat Has Smallpox. i i During the time Mr. Claude ' Atkins was confined to his room on Saluda street with smallpox, a cat staid in the same room. lie has recovered from the disease and has heen out about two weeks. The cat has broken out with sores all over its body and it is presumed that it has developed a case of smallpox. The cat was ordered killed und doubtless has already i suffered its fate. ? In the Court ot Common Pleas for York the suit of Samuel VV. Mitchell 'against the Woodmen of the I World for $25,000. damages, alj leged to have been sustained by the plaintiff at the hands of certain members of the camp at Hickory Grove, in this county, at the j time ho was initiated on March 22, I 1001, was commenced this after< noon. ITp to the time of adjournment seven or eight witnesses, including the plaintiff had been examined. Most of the testimony brought out on the stand is not lit for publication. Tho case will probably occupy much time, as about fifty witnesses hare been subpoenaed and sensational developments are expected. Mitchell is represented by Mr. Geo. W. S. Hart and Major #Iat?. J F. Hart, ?and the Woodmen by Messrs. Finley & Br ice, the former having arrived in Yorkville today for the purpose of taking part in the defence. Mitchell claims to have been in jured while riding the woodmen's goat at the time of his initiation. The goat, or what was claimed to be the identical goat ridden by the plaintiff, was introduced in evidence. It is an apparently harmless mechanical contrivance and was brought into court in a trunk, "knocked down" or in pieces, and has not as yet been setup and its ollico in the initiation ceremony illustrated. . J. C. Root, Sovereign Commander of the W. O. W.;George Wooly, Sovereign organizer, and H. C. Braum, attorney, all of Omaha, Neb., are here on account of the suit. S. M. (i. ?*WLV ??* ... Columbia, April 22.?The Stute pension hoard was in session today winding tip its worli on the pensions that are to he paid this year. It will ho of interest to nolo that there is i steady increase in the number o pensioners each year. The lisi has never heen as large as a present and, instead of death re during the number of pensioners, the number is growing at the rate of about a thousand each year, regardless of the absolute stringen cy of the State pension board. The list is growing year bj year arising from two causes. First, the sensitiveness about ask' ing for and getting a State pen sien is fading away to a largo extent. Soldiers who for x long time did not feel like asking foi pensions find that their neighbors are getting pensions, and they feel that if their neighbors, who i are no more deserving than them1 selves, are getting pensions thai 1 they might as well be doing the ' same thing. Theu the old soldiert are getting older year by ycai and that gallant hand is fasl reaching the age limit?sixty? when all are eligible for pensions, and the age restriction lets in c great many who have heretofon been debarred on that account.
