Convicted of tho Murder of Changes B\rd in Union. Special lo the State. Union, April 8.?At 12.3(Modar Simwn KUis, colored, was convicted of the murder of Cbas. Byrd, also colored, on Oct. l32d, Inst year. The condemned man wan either not ablo to employ a lawyer or thought his case a hopeless one. .lodge Hudson therefore appointed .1. A. Sawyer and .J. (i. Hughes to conduct his case. As soon as they were appointed they hud a conference with Ellis und found thut he only had throe witnesses, while the State bad cloven. The jury was soon drawn and within a few hours a verdict of guilty was reached. The killing occurred at Monarch mills at night and while the deceased was sitting ont in his yard under a tree. Ho was shot with a gun once in the left arm and in the side, dying almost iininediate'y About two hours before the shooting the two hud a fuss about a woman who wis then living ai Hyrd's house. Some lime before she had lived with defendant, but | ho had left hero when the SpanishAmerican war broke ont, and was gone about a year. Ever siuce he returned the defendant had been mad with both the woman and Byrd, and on the day of the (killing almost tot e her clothing off. The deceased was working near by and came to her rescue, and came very near hitting defendant with a brick. The defendant left then, going home about two miles,secured the gun and coining buck, walked up from behind the house and shot. This is the first conviction of murder since 1SD0, when Wade Davis was hanged for killing a woman. Patrick, the Now York lawver who was convicted of the murder of millionaire Rice, whose namoho had forged to a bogus will giving himself all of Rice's money, has been sentenced to die in the electric chair on May 5th. The request was granted. How Rhodes Got the News. Chief Wilkie, of the secret service, * told a most interesting sto'y to a party of congressmen, yesterday. lie says that he found it in a foreign edition of Alatk Twain's "Innocents Abroad." Many years ago a young Englishman was stranded in Australia. Wandering disconsolately along the short he met a man who was fishing for sharks, the Australian goverment offering, by the way, a bounty upon all sharks killed. The fisherman engaged the young Englishman to help him, promise ing him half of the bounty earned. While the fisherman was away a shark was caught and killed. The young man cut it open, found ia its stomach a cop\ of the Condon Times, read the paper and departed at orico for Sydney. There he secured au audience after some difficulty with a rich merchant aud boldly proposed to borrow 100,000. The merchant laughed in his face. "Will you guarantee to lend rao the mouev if I can show vou how it will lead to a fortune ?" asked tho would-be borrower. "Yes," was the reply. "War has been declared beiweeu Germany and France, and the price of wool in London has advanced tremendously. If we can buy up the whole Australian output wo can make a fortune." Again the merchant laughed. "The last copy of the London Times," he said, "says no hing about any war."
