The waters of the creek had never
been known to reach their prerai- ;
set during the largest freshets
but on this occasion thay not only j
reached the premises, drowning :

dwelling. They made a narrow |
escape but reached high ground j
sufely by wading.
Engineer Wall of the L & C Badly

the L. & C. special which ran
from Ltnca?ter to Chester Monday
morning, was badly hurt at
Bascensbville by falling off of a
freight car. He noticed the limb
of a tree projecting over the track
and taking his axe went up on
tbo car to cut it off. While cut.
ting, the limb broke unexpectedl}',
causing him to fall. One rib was
broken, a wrist badly sprained
and his face and head considerably
bruised and cat. Ho was
taken on to Richburg where Dr.

, wounds. Dr. Pryor of Chester
was phoned for and came over on
the midd&y' tr'ain bringing Mr.
Wall on to Lancaster. He was
resting quietly yesterday after!
noon but it bo will be some time
before be can resume his run.
Tax Collections
The County Treasurer has be?n
i, figuring up the result ot bis col.
lectiens since the tax books were
closed. The total amount of taxes
charged including "additional*"
was about $48,00C. The total
collected foots ?p to ab at $47,255,
leaving about $750 uncollected.
Including "additionala" the
total number ef receipts was 5,800.
Only about 350 remain
not taken up. This is a fine showing
fifr Lancaster considering the
poor crops of the past year. Most
of tbu b no fill amount in arrears
will jot be collected.

and three daughters surviving
him. His wife died eleven years
ago at the ago of 78. His remain*
were interred by the mide

Poortitb, N. C., last Sunday.
Death of Mr J H Chambers
Another old Confederate soldier

survivors of Lee's gallant army.
Mr. ,1. H. Chamber* died last
Friday afternoon at bis homo in
the Douglas vicinity after only a
few days illness. Tuesday before
he was iu his accustomed health
aad working in his farm. Wednesday
morning he was stricken with

Mr. Chambers was horn in
Chester county Sept. 5. 1824, and,
was in his 78th year. Farming

unions. He has lived in this
county the past fifteen or twenty !
