When the death sentence was pronounced the negro collapsed completely and wept like a child. Perspiration in huge drope stood upon his forehead und his heads, in fact his whole body shook like an aspen. There was nu immense crowd in town for the trial and the court house from 10 o'clock in the morning till sunset was packed to the doors. There was scarcely breathing apace. Mr. P. A. Wilcox, one of the aplest lawyers of the gtate, was appointed by the court to defend the negro, and later Mr. B. W. (J. Shtpp, another able attorney of the | local bar, was requested to assist him. I Solicitor Jno. S. Wilson conducted tho prosecution. Four witnesses for the State were examined When Mrs. Haynea, the victim, took the stand, the court room was cleared of all except those interested.
