A. COOK, I Auditor, L. C, ' Thi Sooth Wasting Her Opportnoities, Mr. W. H. Fin lay .on Call. At tantion to It. Manufacturing Enterprises Ready to Come, Hut Solicitation. Necessary. To tha Editor of Tha State. If tha people af South Carolim 1 would put an industrial agent ii New York city alone?one capable and "up to it"?ho could fin< wark 900 days ia tha year, 24 hour, each day, and it would b< at I a * - * * uitt or si investment the falmetti State ever made. Unless a par son has lived in both places, am been a close observer and an en thusiast ou industrial developmen such cannot grasp the situation,tb opportunities, the possibilities much less the blenoing ef the two I see now that while the Stat of South Carolina has forged t< the front and accomplished won dcrs in cettna mill building, i ban aeglscted more important in dustries and easy possibilities that could hare, and yet can b had. They are still rips aut numerous. 1 refsr to the stnalle and miner manufacturing enter prises- plants that ask no favors nor investment in their steck New York city is chock full o such ? packed from two and threi | stories below the ground or up t< eight and tan iteries above ground ownad by man who ara aking ou u i are existence?altbeugh doioj immense business and employing thousands of hands, expenses aa up their prefits, rants, lights fuel, labor ? particularly the lat tar ara fearfully high hare. T< illustrate, a certain article pro duced in the south that Ian familiar with, the labor of tha enters into it is $2 par dozen i here it is $5. When brought t< the atteotieu of a manufacture here ha has navar given it i thought, seemed te think we onl; grew cotton. lie grasped it ii tire minutes and bad mo to opei negotiations to ship bia raw ma terial down there te make up Theae people here, the &verag< man, knows lees of conditiem south, than the southerner doei of the north. negro man frou my town arrived hern two weeki ago anal in 20 minutes was offeree $2.50 per day, or $4 per night and he only an ordinary laborer. Heads get $2 to $7 pet day hart and the difference in labor alone is sufficient inducement to hole out to eay nothing ef lenger hours, freedom frons labor unions, striket etc., coat of living, rents, power, fuel and local support; this lattei is aot known hern. Tbeusands of tbean enterprise! could be moved south, with ease, by proper werk. Advertising; in no good ? no attention is paid to it. Many of these plants are owned and operated by foreigners, who pay so attention teanything except the putting in of ten full hours each day and grinding out all possible in the manufactuied product. It matters not where this is done?the market earea not?asks not. W hen approached with inviting schemes, no attention is paid, but if presented with facts shewing advantages of 10 to 50 per cent, in saving in the cest of production jf their wares, you are their m&n and they are all attention, ready and willing to listen and ready to ge with you and investigate in an hour. They want no help; wont have partners, stockholders, board A directors and all these things ? they will move themselves; furnish all the capital ask no favors. All they want is a verification of the representatienu. Such are not insignificant by any means. They nperate 100 to 1,000 hands, none Df them skilled except, the leaders. To pick up and place a half deze I or mor? of these enterprises in any town of 1,000 to 20,000 popula ' tion in South Carolina would do ( | far mere good than anything 1 conceive of to advance, and almost iastaDtly, tha material prosperity of the State. w The writer never realized the thing in hnlf it* importance* and St easy to set at, aa much as during p< the past few months.
