Fifty-Five Counties Are More or Less Affected. Galveston, ,Ian 5 ?From the returns gathered and published by the Galveston News, it is shown that 35 counties in Texas aro more or less affected by the bnll weevil. Counties of southern Texas being literally infested while in north Texas they have only appeared in isolated counties. The great cotton producing counties of the State were attacked last year for the first time in a threatening manner and thero is great dread for the future. River counties suffered most and river farms appearto bo worse attacked. Wooded sections harbor woovil in winter. Taking the census figures of productions as basis it is estimated that the boll weavil destroyed cotton in the several districts as follows: Southwest Texas 100,000 hales; east Texas 7,500; central Texai 35,000; north Texas none; coast district 90,000. Total 24*4,500 hales. In 1899 and 1900 Texas produced 2,658,555 hales, according to the United States census of which 1,558,500, er over half were grown in the counties now infested with weevil.
