I Allen Again Convicted,
Fer Second Tim* Found Guilty
of Henry Trammell'e Murder.
Special to The Stats.
Greenville. Sept. 21. ?One of
the moat piotracted and interesting
cases at the present term of
i the criminal court was that against
1 Walter Allen, charged with the
killing of Henry Traminell on the
4th of May last. 'This case was
tried at the June term and the defendant
was convicted of murder,
; hut another trial was granted up'
on teachnical grounds. The killing
i took place in the neighborhood of
i Marydell, in the upper section of
the county, and the defence relied
i for accquittul upon two grounds,
- namely, tLa* the deceased had
t made an improper proposal in the
) afternoon to Mrs. Walter Allen
i and that when the shooting occur
t red that night it was in self-dei
fence.
s Mrs. Allen testified at both
( trials to the circumstances under
I which Trail mell made the insult,
iug proposal to her when she was
r unprotected in her own heuse.
, lie bad gone there with a mes
sage from Allen to get a pint of
f liquor, which wae given to him,
i and he then made the proposal
ft whi('l) Kllu rftiiintml Kti '1 ? ?
. wv?uiV?Jl Wf 1TIIO. AUVII,
1 and which Trammel I repeated,
drawing his pistol and taking hold
of her arm, saying ?he would be
compelled to yield, when she
screamed and left ths hcuse. This
is the story told to her husband
f and on the stand. Allen took his
gun and went after Trammel!, and
in giving an account of the shooting
he declared emphatically that
he shot Trammel I in self defence,
believing bis life was in danger.
The juries in both instances returned
verdicts of guilty with
. recommendation te mercy.
The case was begun this week on
Tuesday afternoon and a jury wae
I not empanneled until Wednesday
afternoen, when the testimony ber
gan and continued until Friday
at noon.
