An Awn lint of the Attempted Assassination of President Jack son by Lawrence, a Crazy Printer? The President of Course Attributed it te Mr. Calhoun. To the Editor of The News and Courier: In an article from the I Mm V....K T: i i-i .. til - i 4ivtt x ??i i\ iiiut'd, utiaoea ** i niru Attack on Presidents'" is your issue of today, 1 tind these words: "To Ameticans Lincoln's assupination cams as s new experience in the national hiwtory. I'ntil then no attempt had ever heen made upon the life of any of the fifteen Chief Magistrates who preceded him." Tois is a mistake. On the 30th duy of Junuarv, 1835, an attempt was made to assassinate President Jackson, it was made while the President was attending the funeral services at the Capitol at Washington of the Hon Warren R. Davis, of South Carolina. The name of the man wno attempted the shooting of our then Chi f Magistrate was Richard Lawrence, a printer, residing in Washington \ city. The conduct of the assailed | oilier wkh so characteristic of I ' Old Hickory" tlmt 1 am mire I will he pardoned for quoting at Bimie length an account of the occurrence: "The President, with the Sec retary ef the Treasury on his left arm, on retiring from the rotunda to reach his carriage at the steps of the portico, advanced toward the spot where Law re. ee stood?who hud his pistol concealed under his coat?and when the Presdcnt approached within ttvo yards and a half of him the assassin extended his arm and levelled the pistol at the President's brvast. The percussion cup exploded with a noise so great that several witnesses supposed the pistol had tired. On the in Maul the assassin dropped the pistol from his right hand and taking another ready cocked from his left, presented and snapped it at the President, who, at the moment raised his cane und made for the assailant with lion like nergy, aud would have executed summary vengence had not Secretary Woodbury and Lieutenant Gedney at the same instant laid hold of the man, who gave way through the crowd, and was at last knocked down, the President pressing after him until he saw he was secured. * * * During the ventful moment the President's voice was heard above all others, as tearing himself from his friends, and rushing upon the assassin, he said: Let me go, gentlemen, I am not afraid, they can't kill me. 1 can protect myself.' "Secretary Dickerson testified at the trial of the would-be mur/ derer that the President angrily said at the time of the occurrence that, 'He knew where this came from.' The same author tells us that, 'So great was the excitement preduced by the affair that some ;>f the mest eminent political op* ponents of the President, including such men as Clay, Calhoun and Poindexter, were in the frenzy of the moment suspected of having conspired in this plot to get rid of the President." Of course, "Old.Jack" believed to his dying day that Calhoun and other enemies (all opponents of i "Old Jack" ware Ins "enemies") j put poor Lawrence up to doing J what he did. But "Old Jack," winterer were hie faults, was a j "fighter right" and needed no protection against the bullets of ssaassins or anything else. J. J. D. Darlington, Sept. 10. The One Day CeM Cure. Special to News and Courier. Columbia, Sept. 11 ?Quite a number of letters here been received with reference to the sale of ilmalt tonics." There seems to be a great deal of misunderstanding us to the recent orders ? issued for tne seizure of these malts. The State bourd of com -! mUsioners have had a great deal ' to say on this matter, but the several wholesale drug stores! tb roughout the State seem to be worried that the seizures will be made on ail malt tonics now in their stocks, (jot. McSweeney said today that the order for seiz-1 ing those malt tonics was issued ( from the Governor ofhee, and i that mulls were only to be confiscated when sold as an intoxicant; that is, when same was sold as a beverage for purposes other than medicinal. Some of the drug heuses wbo have nade the in(piiriea seem to think that some trouble will tie experienced from | the different views taken on this order. Some mere explicit working may tie made if the inquiry continues. , Mountain Excursion Rates. These roads were built under the administration of the incumbent supervia r, Mr. Owens, but he has not confined himself to roads alone and is malt leg substantial bridges also. The county will this year invest $3,000 in iron bridges, whereas it hus heretofore been expending $800 for repairs on wooden bridges. The iron was bought from builders of the State Capitol who ?ot it from the structure of the old roof. Four splendid bridges have been built recently, two on the ''Bluff road," one over Smith's Branch and one over Bluck Creek The bridge just being completed over Hampton's Creek on the Bluff road is 85 feet long, and is a heavy structure with overhead girders. A 50-foot bridge over the creek at Dent's Bond is to be built next. These bridges not j only save expense of repairs, but , afford county people a sure and safe means of getting into Colliru? , bia in times of freshets. I ASTOUN l)KD THK KDITOK I Editor S. A.
