Tbe totals of Secretary Heste-'s annual report ot the cotton crop of the United States were promulgated last Men day. They show receipts of cotton at all 1900-1901 of 7,666,452 against 6,734,365 lust year; overland to northern mills 1,140,237 against 1,161,189; southern consumption taken direct from the interior of the cotton belt, 1,576,733 against I,540,663, making the crop of the United States for 1900-1901 amount to 10 383,422 bales against 9,436,416 last year and II,274,840 the year before. Mr. Hester has made bis usual investigation into the consumption of every cotton mill in the south, including the woolen mills that have used c tton, and the results show a total of 1,620,931 bales, but of this 44,198 bales! were taken from ports, included in port receipts. This shows that the mills of the South have used up 23.819 bales more than in the year during 1899-1900, against a consumption by the North of j 2,050,000. Mr. Hester also gives the actual production of Oklahoma as 119,063 and Missouri 25,794. His report on the cotton crop of the different states is as follows: North Carolina, including Ken tucky and Virginia, 542,000; South Carolina, 911,000; Georgia, 1,295,000; Alahnma, 1,000,000; Florida, 45,000; Mississippi, 950,000; Louisiana, 79,000; Arkansas, 762,000; Tennessee, including Oklahoma, Missouri,Kansas r.nd Utah 350,000; Texas, 3,809,000. Total crop, 10,383,000. Notwithstanding the fact that the crop for the year just closed exceeded .that of last year by 947,006 kales, the South obtained for this crop an increase of $130,782,729 more money. The value of the year just closed wan $484,567.549, which sum breaks all previous records. Government Report of Crop Conditions. ?? I Another Generally Unfavorable ) Week for Cotton?Excessive i Rains Injurious. Washington, Sept. 3.?The , weather bureau's general sum- | mary of crop conditions is as follows: "While tin? weather conditions ef the week ending September, , 2, 1901, have been generally favorable in a majority of districts, heavy rains (in some olaces ex A cessive) have injured crops and retarded work in portions of the south Atlantic gulf States, and hot, dry weather has been un? favorable in the Missouri and upper Mississippi ralleys and on the north Pacific coast. Extreme heat and drought in localities of Oklahoma and Texas have also been very detrimental to crops. Late corn continues to show improvement, although it was injured by drought and heat in portions of Kansas; has suffered further decline in Missouri and needs rain in Nebraska. It has suffered injury by floods on low lands in Tennessee. Reports indicate that the bulk of the late corn will be safe from injury from frost by September 15 to 20, but thut some very late fields will : ? require until October 1 to fully mature the crop. Another generally unfavorable week for cotton. Continued complaint of rust and shedding are ( received from the greater portion of the eastern and central sections of the cotton belt, while OUlahoI ma and Arkansas report injury i from premature opening. In Texas the early cotton continues to open and is being rapidly picked hut the late crop is greatly deteriorated and in a critical stute with complaints of rust and shedding. Picking, while retarded in Georgia und portions of Florida, is in progress in neirlv all section*, and with favorable weather will soon be geueral. Excessive Anger Brought on Heart Failure Which Killed \ Him. i i Special to The State. Camden, Sept. 3.?Joe Ham- ' moad, a yeung negro of about 25, ' died on Sunday suddenly in a very mysterious way. On that afternoon Hammond, Willie Yn? den and about eight ether negro youths were gambling.in a ditch ! near the Seaboard Air Line passenger depot. Hammond and! Yaden got into a dispute, during | which the former advancer! at the : latter with a knife in his hand, ' but was intet cepted by one of the , crowd, who stepped up behind Hammond and pinned his arms . te his side. Matters quieted down and Hammond made a few steps to resume his former seat, and then fell down dead. The coroner's inquest held by Magistrate C. C. Moore rerealed no external injuries. As the county allows only a doctor's fee of S10 for a post mortem examination, and the local physicians refuse to perform one at that price, it looks as if the supposition that Hammond came to his death by heart failure will stand.
