May 27, 1901. Mr Newbold Makes an Offer. Chester S. C. May 23 1901. Editor Lantern: In you paper of the 14th inst, you cop a letter recently published in Lancaster paper, from J. A Montgomery, of Oxford, Miss about the recent Reese captui , fiasco. When 1 first saw th letter 1 thought that I would tre: it with the contempt that it ar its a it nor deserved, as I hare n? ther the time nor inclination I engage in a newspaper controveri with an}' one, but sitce these ge tlemen have seen fit to doubt ir word and to intimate that I w ' bribed bv Reese in the iail at O 1 ford not to identify him, I w ' have this to say to them at lean 1: That if they will prove that I Stevens and Marion R. Reese a one and the same man, I will p them two hundred dollars ($2( in addition to the rewards alrea : offered, and I will pay also I J necessary expenses of such iden s | fication, as well as the expenses II bringing the man to this state. Stevens was under indiclm< j in the United States court in i cases for using the mails f n j fraudulent purposes. and twenty other oases for impi sonating a United States ofiii v . - ? . * I for fraudulent purposes, and 1 United. States district at.ten told me that he would have trouble in sending Stevens re for life, and this gentleman w to the jail with me for the p pose of delivering the man up me if I "identified" him >11 _ ? , Reese, let it never occured gr Messrs. Porter and Montgora< that if I had been "bribed" wanted to benefit the mai would have "identified" him IC ^ Reese, and would have stai back with him and let I nt m escape en-route. Xo I do not know Mr. Porter, ch his kinsman, Mr. Montgorae took advantage of my arrivia Oxford, Miss., to beat the- hi vt. man out of a ride up town also to beat the proprietor of the Magnolia hotel out of hit* supper, and it is said in Oxford that he has never done anything since his arrival there thirty years ago but loaf and act as bailiff during court, and I don't suppose that he can injuie anyone except where he is not known. This being the case in this county is one reason that 1 write this letter. 1 will say in conclusion that I have sufficient money deposited to make this offer good, and I shall pav no attention to any further communications in the papers. Yours very truly, YV. H. New hold. Children's Day at Tabernacle. Saturday Juno 8th will be observed as children's day by the Tabernacle Sunday School.
