We heard a man sav a few days ago that lie had trare ed ovor , some of Mecklenbutg and Union counties in North Carolina and found the roads in verv good condition When he struck South Carolina, he said he knew it by the roads, and it was a disgrace to the reputation of such public spirited people a# South Carolinians to nave such loads. Mr. .1 A Hyatt spent this week in Charleston, as delegate from Cedar Camp W () W to the head convention of this jurisdiction of W oodnien, which have been in session in the city by the sea. He reports a fine meeting asd a splendid time generally. Cedar Camp will mutt next Thursday night; all its members should come out and hear Mr. Hyatt's report from the convention. Itates Improved Cotton I have for sale a limited quantity of the Bates Improved cotton seed, a variety superior to any ever grown in thin part of the country, a variety that this year yielded 43 Ihs of lint to the 100 pounds of aerd cotton and made nine hales to the plow. John L. next year. If there ia anything left of him that they will have something to rejoiceover. # * * The Columbia State celebrated yesterday the tenth anniversary of its existence as a newspapei. In an editorial review of its life it gave an account of the struggle it has had?-and a hard struggle it was, tor the tirst seven years. But it is on a firm footing now, and I am glaef of it, for it ia one of the best papers in the country and deservns to livn ond presper. Justifiable Homicide. | i Rock Hill Herald. 1 Thursday night John McCord, i a colored brick mason well known in thia city, waa shot and killad by Capt. W R Bradford, editor of the Fort Mill Times. Thursday morning ha hoarded the train and want to Lancaster in search of tha woman, but while-there learn ad that his wifa had left and wits then in Fort Mill. That afternoon ha returned to Rock Hill and an hour or to later started out afoot to go to Fort Mill. Laney weat there and wee met l?v McCord, who had evidently taken the woman to that town, and McCord. evidently feeling guilt and j learning the consequences, pulled a pistol and fired three ahoia at Laney,the latter meanwhile throw ing h rock in return Laney, ' however, finally ran, and going 1 up in to the town called upon Constable Lee Warren to arreat McCord. The officer at once pro* ceeded to make the arreat, lieing accompanied by Policeman CI \de Culp and the colored man Laney and when on the way they were joined by Capt W R Bradf -rd, near wkose heme the shooting had occurred, and who had been greatly aanoyed thereby, on account of the sickness of his mother and her nervous condition,made much more ao by thia trouble an close to her home. Aa the officers with Laney and Capt. Bradford noared the house, the latter being? somewhat in front, McCord met them and cursing Capt. Bradf rd outrageously, pulled nis pistol and snapped it at Bradford. The lat ter, having a pistol also, at once fired upon the outlaw, shooting three times. Two of the shots took effect, one in the back of the head, the other in the right aide, penetrating the liver, and McCord dropped dead, still clutching his pistol. Three of the chambers were loaded aad one of the bullets showed the indentation made by tha hammer when it snapped. Capt. Bradford at once surrendered to the offieers, and that i?ui *11 inijwaui was neni t?y acting coroner J B Mills and the jury, aftar haaring the testimony of asTsral witnesses, returned a erdict that the deceased cam* to hit death from the effects of gun hot wounds, inflicted hy W It Bradford in self-defence. McCord sustained s reputation ' for great daring and desperation, t was quarrelsome and of exceeding ly had character. Persons from Kort Mill lifinp in thiaeity, when! they heard of his death, remarked | that it is a wonder he had not : been killed long ago. Much sympathy is felt for Mr. , Bradford and the members of hut ' family that h* had to kill the man, hut knewing the decease I as the eommuaity does, the}- fssl that his set was necessary in order to * his own life. He is a young ; man of fie* intelligence and high charactar and no man in the community enjoys more of the esteem of the citizens.
