It is a well-known fact that the I"nited States is leading *he world in iiiumv lines of mannfactnre and commerce. Within the pmt few years it has developed that this country is stronger financially than even Engiaed, herself. All Europe is growing alarmed at the conceded .-upremacv of this country. About the only branch of commerce in which we are behind England is ilu? carrying trade. VS'e uie not onlv behind England; lint behind (jerm&ny, France, Italy and several oth?r nations. England heads the list ia the carrying trade It is understood of all people now-a-dave, that freight rates are an nil important factor in ihe building up aud tearing down of given sections. The big railroad s\ ate na build cities wherever thev like, and make them grow bigger aad bigger. These same railroads prevent other cities from growing It is done i>y discrimination in freight rates. England ia generally believed to have it in her power to lix ocean freight rates for tho world It is certain, that in com hination with other maratime nations, she can easily accomplish this object. Under existing conditions the nations that have ship* find it comparatively easy to fix oro.'in i * - . ..V n^icica I 1141 ?rO calculated t(? discourage the newcomers American vessel* have been discriminated against in the past to such an extent that most American ship owners have foued it advisable to tail their vessel* under the British flag. There are many reason* why this is not to the continued interest of the United States. Among other things, in case of war it is very desirable to have a lArge merchant marine from which to recruit and re inforce the navy. To build up an American merchant marine under existing conditions i* impracticable, and the advocates of the subsidy idea are ef the opinion that the desired end can lie ac complished in no other way. Wo have not aeen a copy of the pending bill. The measure is generally understood to have been drawn by the leading ship-build- , ing concern* of the country, and its details have kern criticisad with more or less favor by dif- j farent experts. Soma think tha hill is correct in principle; hut capable of being considerably improved upon. All are pretty well agreed that though it will be at heavy expanse, tha merchant marine of tha United States will bo consider ably devaloped ? Yorkville Knqnirer.
