Many of you are fathers. You hare felt the loving clasp ot hahy arms around your necks, the soft pressure of hahy lips to yours, the tender touch of hahy hands. You have watched, with strange delight that marvelous mystery of mys teries, the development of a child The first lisping words, mere words, followed by suprising ten terfces, evidence of a % rowing brain. Yon have watched the in fant body as it gained strength and form. Seeing these inexplicable manifestations of the divine power and the divine plan, ynu have marveled. Your heart hae been touched. You have lelt a yearning you never knew before. You have wished to save that child from all suffering, all pain, all sorrow, all trouble. You would lay down your life to save that little one from harm. Such ia the love ef % good parent for hie child. Legislators, would you care to eee your own children confined for 11 hours each day in the stifling atmosphere of a cotton mill 1 Would you care to see your own children spend their childhood at monotonous indoor labor, instead of breathing pure air, inatpad of developing their minds and bodies as God intended* It is not impossible that this may occur. There are today at work in the cotton mills of South Carolina families once in comfortable financial circumstances, who were privileged to enjoy better social oppertunit res, families like yours, and yours. Before yon cast your rots for continuing conditions that must ultimately result in the moral, social and physical degeneration of eueh a large portion of out citizen hip, think of your own children. Boforo you Tote agninstemancipat ing the children of the cotton mill communities think of the children at home. Will you consign these iofants to a childhood virtually without the pleasures of innocent play, without the joys of childish recreation, without the benefit of education? Before you do remember that you have children, and that these mill children are growing up to be possessed of equal power with yours, to have sn equal pait in controlling the future of South Carolina. Shall they compose an enlightened nnd a healthy citizen ship, strong in m nd nnd in body, i .1..11 .I ? ?u Mian iney o0 xnr inferior t< what you want your children to be CegisU or, think of these things Vote so that you may return homo, the session ended, and receive that accustomed lovino j/reetino from your children's lip** j with ?no reproach of conscience, J conscious that you have done your | full duty by the children of South Carolina, and by your own. 11 F. 1.1 F F / V S / X 1! The flames spread so rapidly that it wis impossible *p for the attendants to rescue the th helpless animals and with the ex- pi ception of one elephant, one ram- to el, two donkeys, and a naek of M hounds, the entire herd was lost. sj The tire was discovered at 10:40 to p. rn , a few minutes after the fr evening performance here coaled. *\ Twenty minutes after the lire wn* m discovered, the entire building, c? which was constructed almost en- la tirwly of wood, was a mass of th flames. ti Mr. Boatock estimates his loss R j on animal* at about $400,000.
