It has | been all that the most fastidious j pessimist could desire and has added much to the eninvmeats of ' " this fe*tive season. The W (). W. Christmas tree ami e? tertainment was quite a j success and enjoyed i>T the large attendance. The tree whs heavily j loaded with presents, some hand ' some and costlv, o hers quit* common and cheap, hut neverthe- , less appreciated by the receivers. Santa Cluus and a few others re- j ceived fascinating dolls of a rich hue, and in addition Santa was j given a bottle of medicine 4'for , the baby" which caused much , amusement. I'pon a whole the Christmas tree was a very pleasant affair. The refreshments served bv Cedar Camp was free to all and accepted and enjoyed bv quite a number. Among the visitors of the ?Vaxhaws and about Van W'vck, were U isses Ma/.ie Bvrum of Waxhaw, Lizzie Tillman and Bessie Perry of Lancaster, Ilattio and Gipsie Denton of Camden, who have added much to the pleasures of the holidays. Among the amusements of the season, were several old time home dunoes, where were found the Presbyterian elder, the Methodist steward, the S S Superintendent, and some lesser lights, and "Uncle .Jwhn" says, "the only reason the Baptist deacon was not there, he does not lire in this part of the country. Wo were not there, but wo hare been there, and know some of the enjoyments of these occasions, and are carried back in our thoughts to our young days a quartet of a century ago, when this Waxhaw country was famed for its social occasions, picnics, home entertainments an.I rural dances. Some siy time is repeating itself, and we aro getting hack to the "good old primitive times." Very f*w casualties occurred ' about V n rV\ck during the holi ! lays. > few hands and fingers 1 were Iat : ii.nl by the premature j explosion of canon crackers, but j none of serious nature. Some cotton was set on lire by a sky rocket falling on it, but was put out with small loss. At a colored festival near Springdall, Chafe Witherspoon was shot on the thigh by .John Mobley, but the wound is slight Dr. Houston probed tor the ball but could u >t find it. A good many of our poople havo visited Lancaster this week, Messrs.! A Hyatt.! C Crenshaw, .1 R Williamson, .1 W Bides wore down Inst Thursday. * me attending 'he Masonic meeting, others sight seeing and on business. M rs j .1 M Voder and Master Herman, are visiting Mrs. Voder's sister, Mrs. B Cunningham and Bro. J Wren Tillman this week. Mr. mnd Mrs. G I> Vaughan and Mr. .1 F Rogers arc vi-iting Fort Mill. Mr. and Mrs. R II Massey spent Thursday in Waxhnw. tjenar tump, n . (?, w. >v 111 install their new officers on I huraday night, J Jin 10th. The insta lation will b? public and the camp invite* tho woodmen families and all their friends to come out, and will try to cm* all who attend a pleasant time. The camp is still growing, apd recently * speaker | said in hia address, that the camp wan extending her hol ders from ( the Hen shore to the mountains. If this is literal, if you are not ' already in the camp, you will get ' there Home time. OlTIMl'S. i | For Tho Ledger. A Letter From Mr. .1. E. Craig Who is Visiting in Tennessee. Editor Ledger:?1 boarded the train on the S (J & G Ex. at Lancaster at 3 p ni of the 21st of Dec, arrived at Marion, N. C.. at 0:30 pm. I was to leave Marion at 11:30 p in, on the Southein for Decatur, Ala, without change of cars, via Asheville, N. C, Moriistown, Knoxville and Chatanooga, Teaa. The Southern was three hours late and heavily loaded, and lost time all the way, and when we arived at Chatanooga we were five hours late and our train gone. In the mountains of East Tenn, where our train came to a stand still. It had failed to go over the steep grade This was just at daylight, and the largest frost 1 ever saw was on the ground. The engineer hacked down again; I don't know how tar, and I suppose got up more steam, and we went over, another engine was attached at Morristown and helped us over to Ivnoxville. It is a tine country from Knoxville to Chatanooga. The great Sweet Water Flour-' ing mills is on this line. Around Sweet Water I never saw as much wheat sowed in my life. In fact, 1 didn't see any land left to work to amount to anything. We arrived at Chatanooga at 12 o'clock noon and had to wait until 0 p m. 1 went out to the range of moun- , tains and up them as far as I felt ahle to walk. The people of the city live away up on the side of this mountain. Thev grade it down to a level and build. This mountain is not rocky. I then took a street car and ran out to Lookout mountain. It is fine scenery. There is an incline up the monntain where a street railway is laid. An engine on top the mountain with a cable draws the car to th^ top. I didn't go up as it looked very dangerous, but there has never been an accident on it. If I were there this morning I would go to the top. I i arrived at Campbells 12 hour* ater than I should have done, and no one was expecting me on that train, as it was a through passenger from New Orleans to Louisville, Ky. It only stops in the cities: makes four stops from Decatur, Ala to Nashville, Tenn. 1 will tell you later how I got off. It has been 21 years since I left here, and of course ther* is a big change since then. I know nearly all the older people when I meet them. Some know me and some do not. Of cot rse a great many that 1 knew once have passed away. As to the country, parts of it are ery mountainous. I spent the day yesterday at a house between two mountains and 1 don't think the sun would even shine on it is the winter. As to the soil, it is simply rich. One man said he made 240 barrels of Irish potatoes on six acres without manure. This wit* ms rL- *tti l>l* . "Cv. ? ? ? 1IWJ had good crops this year. Very little cotton is raised here. Farming hait changed a good deal aince I left here. There are great blue grass lie!.la here that were in woods when I wa* here before. The Louisville & Nashville railwar a big thing; nix passenger trains a day go over the road and from 2b to 30 freights, sometimes every fifteen minutes. The people all soera gla<l to see me and want me to visit them, but I cannot visit many as I will have to go back by Jan 4th. I am having a pleasant trip, and the weather was tine up to th sQn.orning when it rained some. As to public highways, tluu e has been a great improvement here, nearly every- 1 thing has bpen macadamized. This i ias been done with the road hands 1 w:th some money from the road i ax.
