Jones Declares the Governor Dodged to Prevent items; Reeosrnized. An penis to His Friends. To the Prohibition Democrats of South Carolina: My customers in the State usually come north in August and S? ptenibcr to make their pi rchases for the fall ami winter trade and this has made it necessary for me to he in the house here for the past 30 days, where 1 have been busy and I may have to remain here until after the second primary. I am deeply interested in the success of Col. Hoyt and write to urge every personal and political friend ot mine to do everything in his power to secure his nomination. The (piestion is, whether the whiskey men who now control the politics of the State through the dispensary and blind tigers shall continue in power or whether the sober, intelligent, religions element skull manage the important affairs of state. The result of the first primary shows that Gov. MeSweeney was supported by that taction of the dispensary who do sire to see it run without regard to law and be used to debauch the politics of the State. It also shows that he was supported by the men who run the blind tigers and bv the blind tiger organ, The News and Courier. Hon F B Gary, who was willing for the people to decide whether they should have dispensary or prohibition and riledwed r* ? himself to enforce the law if electod, and lion A U Patterson, who made his canvass pledge upon the rigid enforcement of the law if elected, received very little support from the dispensary machine ami if they were really sincere in their promises to the people, and 1 heliere they were, they will do themselves irreat credit by asking their friends to vote in the coming primary for the nomination af Col tins A Hoyt. They know' thut there will he no improvement! if the governor is elected and that Col Hoyt will enforce all the laws ou the statute hooks. 1 saw Gov McSweeney at the | campaign meeting in Charleston drinking in what was pointed out to me as a hlind tiger (in Hibernian hall) while the meeting wan going on, and when he saw me dodged to keep me from seeing him I said then and thero that I could not vote for him in future for any office and I wasi much surprised to see the governor of the Stute guilty of such conduct. No one lias molested or fi ed that I write thi.s letter hut the love I have for my party and my State has influenced me to do so. MmiiinaiHunHiiHBg NERVOUSNESS, I ? 7 < An American Disease. A C Jones. 1 Philadelphia, Sept 3d. Coy. M'Sweeney's Circular. j4'The Greatest Evil to the Public is the Liquor Seller." To the Editor of The State: Having read with care Gov Me.-. I Sweeney's circular letter which he | addressed "to the people of South Carolina," 1 wish to call especial fl 11 <>nt i< ?t> (ii u irrmit ?1.1?1? w?w?tiui> ?.?' u vut u mui n mt'ii ho mentions. It is this: lie says, '4'The greatest evil to the public is the liquor seller."" The strongest advocate of prohibition can use no stronger language than this. If the governor will now act in accordance with his own statement he will do all that he can to get the State of South Carolina out of the whiskey business. She j is today a whiskey seller. The putting of Maine, Iowa, Kansas' and South Carolina in contrast does not help South Carolina, as she is an avowed "liquor seller," while the others arc not. South Carolina is perhaps the largest "liquor seller" in the United States, and since "the greatest! evil to the public is the liuuorl seller'' what reason have wo to suppose that South Carolina as a liquor seller is not bringing "the greatest evil to the public ?" How strange it seems to see the gov* ernor of a State, of his own accord, point out what he considers to be "the greatest evil to the pitblic" and then give more than three pages of a four-page circular let- | ter to an endeavor to tix upon his own people that evil. One of two things is clear to every one who accepts the governor's statement as to the character! of the of the liquor seller, lie I should go to work to atop the j "liquor seller or not stand as a friend to the public.*' The dispenser, the open eyed tiger who buys from the dispenser and sells again, as well as the "blind tiger" are all "liquor sellors" standing on the same moral ground, where the quality of good and evil are determined Social anil political relation to whiskey selling as a beverage can never change its character before the moral law. It will always be true. Gov McSweeney is right in saying "the greatest evil to the public is the liquor seller." Joab Edwards. LeesvilSe, S (J., Sept 3, 1900. PRKVKNTKD A TRAGEDY. Timely information given Mrs, George Long, of New Straitsville, Ohio, prevented a dreadful tragedy and saved two lives. A frightful cough had long kept her awake every night. She had tried many remedies and doctors hut steadily grew wofse until urged to try Dr King's New Discovery. One bottle wholly cured her, and she writes this marvelous medicine also cured Mr Long of a severe attack of pneumonia. Information About Preparing Land for Wheat. Pens Prominent Factor. Special to The State. Greenville, Sept 4,?The presentation of the prizes, awarded in the wheat contest in our county during the past season, was made according to announcement in the court house yesterday. Although there w\s a large number of farmers in town the attendance on this meeting was slim, politics appearing to predominate every other interest. The meeting, of which Col 11 E Bowen waa elected chairman, was interesting us an interchange of experiences among some of the farmers present, and in its course some valuable practical hints were thrown out. The preparation for and cultivation of the wheat crop was the topic of discussion. The valua of sowing the land, int?ml?<l f/.v ?!.?-< ? - -? - iv/1 n urni, 111 | irah UN fertilizer was strongly emphasized. It wan brought out that fine wheat crops are made on the hi.in* land, year after year, whero peas are made to follow the wheat and turned under. In enriching land for truck-farming several crops of peas are sown in a sing e season, each crop being turned under when about 8 or 10 inches high. I'eas, it was pointed out, do not need cotton need meal as a fertilizer, but Home phosphate in necessary. The methods of preserving the grain when cut, were next touched upon, and the consensus of opinion was, do not thrush your wheat while it in (lamp. It is far l?etter, even in ?uch exceptionally wet weather as wo had during tho past season, to leave it capped in the field and let it dry perfectly wheu clear weather does come, than to thrash it when at all wet. I) W Kbaugh of the Mountain City roller mills said that it was impossible to get pretty Hour from grain threshed wheu damp, no matter how ecrefully *"t may be afterwards handled. Stacking in small shocks in the field was also suggested. Mr. B M Moore puts five bundles to the shock, four forming the shock and the fifth used as a cap, and is very much pleased with the results; much less likelihood of the grain sprouting when put in small shocks. The successful contestants, ,J F McKenzie and J I) Sullivan, explaincd their methods of cultivation. Not enough plowing in the preparation of the land was emphasized as the greatest defect in raising this valuable crop. In their cases the ground had been plowed and crossed-plowed three or four times liefore the grain waa sown, and so tho manure was thoroughly incorporated. The various prizes, which have been already announced, were then given out, and a resolution adopted, urging the farmers in view of the success attending this contest to pay vet more attention to wheat raining an a cash crop.
