I HANDS U1M Tito Crowd Hold up Their Hands When Senator Tillman Gives the A'onl. Spooial to The State. I'ickens, (' II, via Kaslev, Aug 7. ? rite most tiresome, the most wearing, the most uninteresting campaign meeting thus far held occurred here today. For seven long hours the speaking continued and during that timo the audience had to stand. It is no wonder that the voters became disgusted and talked to amuse themselves, or until they decided to go home Senator Tillman estimated that a third of the crowd had gone home before he spoke, and it was a won.1 tl.-.i 4 1 I . 1 - - - II ui-i iiuii nun 11:11 noi 1111 pone. The most remarkable phase of the meeting today was the apparent acrobatic feat of the audience in its hand primaries. The two principal primaries were those of llovt and Tillman. Mr L P Odell had been worrying Col lioyt with questions and Col Hoyt replied as rapidly as the questions were tired until finally he said that he would take a hand primary and see whether the crowd was for the dispensary or prohibition. The vast majority of those voting voted for prohibition in this hand primary. Senator Tillman said it was about 70 to 10 or 15 ; and when Senator Tillman i came to apeak he took a hand pri- I I mary which resulted the same as jthey have at previous meetings, j 00 per cent of those voting hold* i ; ing up their hands and hurrahing , for the dispensary. tillman's religion, truly. Whitman 8hid that the badges wore worn because of the plated pins, but whatever the cause was, McSwteney-Tillman badges were very much in evidence. The ten dency of all tho gubernatorial speeches today was to go for MeSwoeney more than usual. Mo Sweeney in his speech said that the evident purpose was to pull him down as the other candidates must recognize him as leading or they would not devote so much time in their effort to get his office. C RA1TF.RS RAPPED. Mr Gary in his speech made no reference whatever to the Char leston affair, and when Mr Patterson came to speak he omitted the Charleston controversy which occasioned the Laurens scrap, but ho took occasion to repeat his statements relative to the salary and tho position which the three Gary brothers would hold if his opponent was elected. The three dispensary candidates all took occasion to rap Col Hoyt and his prohibition ideas, bi t Col Hoyt seemed to beat his best, especially in his reparttee with those who interrupted him. Col Hoyt wanted it understood that he was making his race on principle, and that this was the first tune ho had ever presented himself for oflico and that he did it not because ho liked to go into politics, but because he was presented as the exponent of a prin ciple that was dear to him. The talk of tho political and unholy ? 11_ 1? -- ? uiiiuiivc w?. ? simpiy mi enori on the part of some to cloml the issues. If it wus not right for the citizen to engage in the sale of liquor it was not right for the State to do so. Ho favored the repeal of the dispensary law, and this did not mean the sale of liquors through drug stores. He said he had no objection to the part that Tillman took in the campaign, except that he thought Tillman should take no part in State politics, and it was even be ing intimated, jokingly no doubt, that Tillman had come out *o hcl| lloyt. If Tillman persisted ir lighting him he would try issuei with the present argument an< was saustieu that the peoph would act without dictation and in they should. He felt that prohi hition was wanted and would win WHITMAN SPOKE WlTII FIRE. (} Walt Whitman spoke wit! fire. Ho jumped on the Stat< colleges, niado fun of the Mc Sweeney badges, spoke of tin rottenness that was alleged tt exist in the State government said what he would do if electee governor, and insisted that tlx dispensary was neither enforee< inside or outside of it. TILI.MAN NOT LIVELY. l'here wiit* nothing ?specialI) new in the speech of Senatoi Tillman. lie made his customary speech in favor of tho dispensary, jumped on prohibition with hot! feet in a vigorous manner; spokt of his reasons for being in the campaign and his duty to the people as he looked upon it and how Ollsv it. tvfitlhi h?va lioon ? to have thrown sugar plums and o(Tended no one and why he de fended himself and the dispensary at all times no matter what somt people thought. He insisted thai the prohibitionists have heen defeated four times already and they ought to he horied this time foi once and all. He insisted that the records showed that more liquoi in drunk under prohibition than at any other time. WHO ARK THK HN4KKH t f He of coarse took up the min I isteriul mutter and hit out as usual. He said that the opposition was the same old snake that tried to kill tho Reform movement in S92 and '94 and that some poor follows did not now rceog nize it as tho same old snake. In his pictuiing the two armies that were fighting the dispensary he had one of them under Bishop Duncan and the other under N G Gonzales, and said that all of 11 o | : ministers who are fighting him I . ... and for prohibition and their allies have always been his opponents and have always lined up against I the Reform movement and Tilltnanism, and what it meant. The 'people hud no right tc? expect anything else of these men, and ho did not see why they are now to be expected Residing with the people or Reform movement. WHY 1IK FIGHTS IIOYT. Tillman wanted it understood that he was not antagonizing Col Hovt personally, but was only fighting his principle and prohibition, and would continue to do so throughout the campaign. Ho again warned the audience to he careful in the selection of the | ! members of the general assembly, ! 1 and showed that no governor could repeal the dispensary law, j but that the legislature had to bo 1 watched. IIAIM'Y WITH KEBUI.T. Although Tillman said that the | cro'^d must he tired to death and i he was nearly dead, he spoke for I three quarters of an hour.
