Happenings at Lenoir. Editor Ledger:?I would like to give you a few dots from the little breezy Lenoir. It has been right warm during the day, but the nights are cool. There has not been a night this summer but what I have slept under cover. The good people of Lenoir are making considerable preparations for the Sunday School chautauqua which is to meet Sunday August the 14th, to 19th. Lenoir is a live little town of about 1,500 inhabitants, with 4 churches and a fine college. The' 2[ood peoplo as well as the bad of the Old North State hare been considerably excited over politics his season and the Democracy of Jald well count y turned out last Tuesday in r*rpHt nnmKurs I J O w lend the grand rally. Early in the morning people began to ar<rive and by ten o'clock a crowd ' rati mated at about 4,000 had gathered in town. All parts of the county was well represented, ind decorated Marshals and fair ladies were riding hither and thither with lovely flags and banners of red, white and blue. The procession consisted of over five hundred persons on horse back, led in parade by a handsomely decorated band wagon drawn by four tine white horses, in which was the Lenoir Cornet band, and some few distinguished speakers After the parade, which was an inspiring scene, the crowd gathered in the college grove where Hons. F S Spruill and B F Long, made forcible and eloquent Democratic speeches. The day was perfect and the crowd all good humored, nothing occurring to mar the occasion and not a single arrest was made. Our heroic Capt. Johnson, tho ideal chief Marshal, and all his assistants.did their duty well and everything moved on in tine shape. Every^ body that was present seemed to enjoy the occasion except a few Populist and Republicans. On Thursday everybody turned out to the polls that was allowed to vote with the gloriou? result that the Old North State has gone Democratic 50,000 majority for white supremacy. Three cheers for North Carolina. 1 W M j Lenoir, N C, Aug 7. A Palpable Inconsistency. If prohibition means "free liquor," why is it that liouor drinkers are so violently opposed to prohibition? One would think thnt free liquor whs just the thing they want. Buoky Patterson, Senator Tillman and The Columbia State continue to lambast Got McSweeney because the dispensary law in Charleston is not enforced, notwithstanding the fact thut neither can point to a time since the dis|>ensary law went into operation when it was in force in Charleston. This is ft queer combination, but to use Tillmanesque logic, since each is trying to convince the people that Goveronr Mc Sweeney has not done his duty in Charleston it follows that they have entered an unholy, or holy, alliance. It is worthy of note that Col. lloyt has never used this argu^ ment against the election of Mc Sweeney.
