where she will upend several weeks
trying to regain her houlth. Her
father, Mr D E Helms, accompanied

A Coal Car Wrecked.

loaded with coal were being taken
down the side switch to the cotIon
milt on the SC&G extension,
when they got from under control
of the brAkeman. Ho stuck to
his brake until he saw it would be
dangerona to stick longer, then he
jumped from the car. The cars
ran off the end o* the track, across
the r.de track of the L & C,
breaking the rails in two, plowing
up the embankment, and dumping
one car of the coal into the patoh
of corn west of ?tbe railroad fill.
One or two of the cars were badly
broken up.

The Dixie ami Lancaster camps
of Confederate veterans held a
joint meeting here Saturday, to
elect delegates to the State reunion
to he held in Greenwood today

Thursday, the Oth, as reunion
day. A full attendance is
desired, as an effort will ho made
on that day to complete enrollment
of tho veterans of this county.
Everybody is expected to take a
well tilled basket. A committee
was appointed to secure speakers
for the occasiou.

A telegram to Mrs W YV Perry
Monday morning announced the
death of her brother-m^law, the
Rev Robert D Periy, which occurred
at his home in Fairfield
county the evening before. Rev

some time from spinal injuries re-ceived
while riding in a freight
cab on the G C & N R R, and died
from the effects of those injuries.
He was a native of Lancaster
county and was about years of
age. He server! in the late war.
Ho was a good and devout man
and has spent moot of his lifo in
the ministry, serving a number of
Presbyterian churches in this
State and in Florida as pastor
He was twice married and leaves
his last wife and several children
surviving him. He also loaves
a brother, Capt L J Perry, and a
sister Mrs T F (Myburn, of this
county. To the surviving relatives
wo extend our deepest sympathy.
Good rains have fallen in several
sections of the county this
week.
Mr J B Crockett returned Sunday
from* a visit, to relatives at
Rook Hill.

An Allendale correspondent
whose letter was printed in The
State yesterday, asked us to answer
a question raised in his community:
"Will not the cancellation
of a candidate's name from
the ticket, when only one candi
date is in the field, nullify the
whole ticket?". We answer,
certainly not ! If the printed
ballot only showed one name the
cancellation ot that name would
of course make the ballot a blank
one; but this is impossible in the
case of the official ballot provided
for the coming primary, which
contain* many names for many
offices. This "blanket" ballot is
used for convenience, but it is in
effect a combination of ballots,
one for each office to be voted for.
If there should be but one name
presented for a certain office and
the voter should.scratch that name,
the ballot, so far as that otlice is
concerned, would ibe blank; but
the names voted for the other offices
would have to be counted.
No voter can be forced to vote
for a candidate he does not favor
on penalty of not having his rede
counted for the candidates he does
fa vor. To throw out his ballot
if he refused compliance would be

j Sutro Cotton Mill has gone to the
I wall and taken with it the Loan
j and Savings hank. The Sutro
j Mill, Mr. T R McClain, proprie
tor, has been understood to be
! shaky for several weeks, but the
J crash did not come until yesterday
afternoon, when it became
known upon the clotting of the
bank that its doors would not bo
opened this morning. The liabili ties
of the bank are about $115,000
in round numbers, and of the
Sutro Mill $00,000. The nomina'
assets of the Sutro Mill are abo> t
$115,000, but it is not at all likely
that from these can be realized
100 cents on the dollar of indebted
ness. It is not pructicahle to
state the assets of the Imnlr i?L
) capital is f36,000 and its de
positors will he paid in full, very
probably, but the bank has failed
beyond hope of early reorganization.
Mr. McClain will at once tile
a petition in bankruptcy.
Messrs dames W Hart and W
YV Lewis are in Chester asking
i Judge Gage to appoint a receiver
for the bank. The president and
hoard of directors have offered to
give their services in winding up
the affairs of the institution free
of charge.
There being hut one bank here
nearly all of the business interests
