Li Hung Chang, there is now littlo doubt, is also acting in concert with Prince Tuan. m r i England and Germany Will l)eelate War Against China. London, July 19. ?The British and German governments, alarmed at the idea of this eventuality, have decided to abandon the policy which they have pursued, apd to declare war upon China, tus placing themselves in line with Russia, and France and the United States aro expected to follow suit immediately. France has, indeed, already issued a decree forbidding the sale of arms or war material of any kind to the Chinese, while Germany, which has already prohibited the Chinese envoy at Berlin from communication with his government, except through the German foreign otfce, is preparing to give him his passports. Here in Ixindon the Chinese minister has already packed his belongings, removed his hoys fromthe schools und cancelled nil his engagements, so as to he ready for immediate neparture. In additional to the courts of the imperial Chinese army, which has invaded ^Siberia with orders to drive ail foreigners out of the rich gold hearing Amur province of the czar, there are live other corps, one of which is engaged in destroying the Russian railroad in Manchuria and in driving all the foreigners, especially the Russians, from the northern portion of the empire ; another is to oc- j cupy the road between Pekin and 1 Shan Ilai Kwan ; yet another is to concentrate at Nankin, while | columns are being directed in hot , haste to Tien Tsin, to the borders j j of Korea and to the neighborhood , of Shanghai. - - i 'This is our ticket, and we ex- ' pect to stand by it as long as we ; have sense and reason and a con- 1 science. We are going to vote ; our convictions every time, and i we believe that this is just what ( every true man should do. No doubt about it, the prospect for i the cause of prohibition was never i o bright in South Carolina."? i South Carolina Baptist. General rains which fell in India improved the situation in the famine districts. t For The Ledger. The Church of God. A church of God is, according to the Scriptures, composed of those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to the duties, responsibilities, and privilege# of Saintship. We as a church, as a state, as a nation, profess to the world that we are christians. If so, let us prove it if wo can. 1 believe we will make a tailure. Why ? Because it is written, * "Thou 8lmit worship the Lord 1 thy God and him only shalt thou * serve." Have wo done it ho cording to the commandments of God, if so, wherein have we done it? hy putting ungodly men in our legislative halls, and our 1 governor's chair, that have made laws that are in conflict with tho will of God and ruinous to man- 1 kind. The gospel says, "Lay ' hands suddenly on no man, ncith- 1 er ho partaker of other men's ' sins, keep thy self pure. Thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth hating covet* ousness ; For he that biddeth an ungodly man God speed is pirtaker of his evil deeds. The God of Israel said tho 1 Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in tho fear of God." Have we complied with these commands. Any man with half j sense knows, that to license the manufacture and traffic of intoxi* eating drinks, is to stimulate and cause murder, rape, incendiarism, theft, blasphemy and every other sin tnat the devil ever did or can devise. "Woe unto hitn by whom the offense cometh." "Thou ( therefore which teachest another, , teachest thou not thyself ? Thou that preachest a man should not steal, dost thou steal ) Thou that safest a man should not commit adultery, dost thou commit adul- 1 tery i Thou that abhor rest idols, dost thou commit sacrilege ? Thou that makest thy boast of the law through breaking the law dishonored thou God ? For the 1 name of God is blasphemed among the Gontiles thiough vou." i The name of God is often dishonored by his enemies because of me iuu( nsisieneies onus professed friauds. "Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from ( iniquity. Cursed he he that 1 doeth the work of the Lord deceitfully." The love and service of the world is idolatry. Are we idolaters i Why do other nations i kick at our religion ? I say ho- 1 cause it is not Christ's religion. "Christ said overcame evil with good. Let your light so shine f before men, that they may see vour crood wnrU nn<l ?!.? ;#? o ' I your Father which is in heaven." | Strong drink is the fount from 1 whence we get a great deal of our , revenue to support us in our so* < called christians war, to furnish * largo guns and other instruments of death and when we effect a landing a liar room is among ' j the first things that we establish. < I dont blame other nations for kicking at such religion. 1 would not l?e engaged witli such deviU =5 o , ism. f "Go ye into all the world and i preach My Gospel to every creat Lire Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves; be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves. And why t all | ye me, Lord Lord, find do not the things which I say ( He ye not deceived God in not mocked, for | whatsoever a man soweth he also j shall reap." We have been aowing whiskey and reaping drunkards, death, and ruin. A word to the preachers. ''Son of man, < I have made thee a watchman, unto ' 1 the house of Israel: Therefore j hear the word at my mouth and ive then warning from me. Ez. *:17. Son of man cause Jerusalem, .o know her abominations. Ez. 16:2." May God give you suf icient grace, and moral courage that you will cause South Caroina, to know her abominations. J may wo truly repent of our ?ins, and go to God and live. "Woe to him that buihleth a town with blood, and ej-tablishoth i city by iniquity. Woe unto him that giveth his neighbor drink." J do not that abominable thing .hat God hates, and that will destroy both soul and body. Prohibitionist. The political meeting at Dillon, in Marion county, was a groat Hoyt and Livingston ovation. 1'ho newspaper correspondents say that that section of Marion county can undoubtedly be put down as solid for those two candidates. Dear Editor:?We boys have a good time down here?nothing to tlo but work and oat. You may guess that the last part of the program is always carried out to [>erfection. The crops around Hnrtsvillo can hardly be classed among the nrdiniirv Tn? r>r?rn ornn ! J. ~.x,r .o ^IMUJ and the cotton crop averages very fair. Water melons and peaches are abundant, and there is a scatter of hard cider which is considered the finest of fruit. 1 can't just quite tell whether the cider is really hard or just hard to get. Hartsville seems to be holdinir her own in progressive circles. Sho is stoadly and surely building up. The high school at this place is in a thriving condition. The new dormitory for girls,in course of construction, will bo completed some time during the fall and wi'l be ample for the occommodalion of eighty girls or more. The company hopes to have the new oil mill, which is now in course of erection, running by the opening of the season. It will lie an up to date mill and fitted up with the latest improved machinery. The new cotton mill, which is to be n. two hundred on?l ?#?.. ? . . w ..vvt c?iiv4 uii y thousand dollar enterprise, will he under course of construction soon, and will he pushed to completion at the earliest time possible. There is not anyone around our town that seems to be interested very much in politics or any other kind of ticks. For fear of a consignment to the waste basket, 1 will ask you to excuse the reverend.
