was fractured by a blow with u

The city council took a step in
the right direction when it passed
an ordinance a few days ago re^
quiring a $500 license to sell cigarettes.

Several mules dropped (lead in
the farms from the excessive heat
the past week. Mr. J APSistare,
wo learn, lost a very tine mule;
Col Springs also lost one on one
of his farms, and Mr. ?J T Stevens
had one to drop dead to his wagon
while haulding lumber.

Two More Mild Cases.
We learn that the husband,
Sam Horton, of the negro woman
who recently had small pox on
Mr Clanton's place, near the
Ilailo Gold Mine, mow has the
disease,ami that his mother, Anne
Horton, also has it. They are
pronounced very light cases and
no uneasiness is expressed about
the spread of the disease. A
guard is kept about the premises
j to prevent any one going to the
houso. The people of the vicinity
ate not at all alarmed. Some say
they don't mind having it if they
can get off with as light cases as
these parties havo.
Dropped Dead Between Plow
Handles.
About 10 o'clock Mondav
morning John Izard, a colored
man working on the Kibler farm,
about six miles South of town, i
dropped dead while plowing in'
the field. He hud made no complaint
during the morning. He
and his son were plowing together.

the row and was turning his mule
ho noticed his fnther's mule com
ing dragging the plow down the
cotton row. Ho ran and caught
it and walked up the row to see
where his father was. He found

Mr \V .1 Oglosby, formerly an
engineer at the Lancaster Cotton t
Mills hut who moved with hisi
family to Chester the early part
of this year, died Sunday afternoon
after a protracted illness. j
He was about 51 years of age and
leaves his wife and several children,
all grown, surviving him.
He was a member of the K of P's
and also the Jr. Order of Mechanics
anil carried #2,000 insurance
in the former and $250 in the latter
fraternity. His remains were
interred at Chester Monday afternoon.
Members from both orders
at this place attended the funeral.
The pal I-bearers woro appointed
three from the K of B's and three
from the ?Jr Order.

Charged With Stealing a Cow
Capers Can then, col, was committed
to jail Monday charged
with stealing a beef from a pasture
a mile or so out from town.
The theft was committed Friday
evening, and Mr Varnadore to
whom the beef belonged, saw

Saturday morning, only its horns
had l?een pawed off and its tail
trimmed up. Mr V, suspicioned
it was his and made search of the
pasture at once. The hide has
heen identified and Capers, apparently,
is in a had scrape this time.

committee met Saturday in
pursuance.of the call of the county
chairman, J F Nishet, and fixed
the assessments for candidates,
passed on the question of candii
dates for magistrates, fixed the
schedule for the county campaign
meetings and appointed managers
of election.
The following assessments were
fixed for candidates of the various
offices:
