Mr. Edit( it:?1 overheard : ?omo days ago a good old brother , remark to another that thoy would like to eee a story written by ' "Pap's Boy." 1 am not very j well acquainted with the people under my new name, llenee, ^,,..4 4-1.- ..II At-! ?1 * iiuni iukc mi mmgs gooci numorcily among btrangers. I knew they wero unaware of Pap's Hoy's presence or that he was a preacher and that they wore inducing a preacher to make an attempt to tell a story. Well, 1 always try to please people, and I sat down in my office trying to think up a story. I thinked an' I thought an' 1 thunk 'till 1 could thunk no more and finully concluded 1 was a (leo Washington, Jr., for I couldn't tell a lie. But I thought again that "whore there's a will there's a way" and it wouldn't do to start a thing and not finish it even if it didn't have a good moral in it, and that if 1 didn't at first succeed I must try again. But 1 knew it vain for me to attempt it in my room alone. So the thought struck me, I shall go out visiting among my neighbors and see the trend of conversation. Well 1 went out to church pretty soon and found a crowd of men assembled before services?which I joined?a thing very unusual for me to do?for 1 invariably seek company among the fairer sex, as I find it more pleasant and elevat> j ing spiritually and morally. I went home with one of the good old church members and visited around among a number of my n? ighbors uud soou found snakes ^ to be the topic of tho day, perhaps becauso it is a bad time for siiasee, nny way mo inougnt occurred to me that a snake story would be the thing for mo to write since I had been impressed with the subject and had received a few pointers at church and among the homes. Hence, to my story about snakes. A snake story is a tale about a snake. A snake is a long slim thing which lives in a hole. A hole is a place in the ground whore there is n.i ground. The ground is the outer layer of the earth. The earth is a member of the solar system and is suspended j in space. Space is that vast ocean of nothing which is extended to . infinity on all sides to hold the ( stories that aro told about snakes. , Ah h snake story is a talc about t a snake, and all shaken have , tails on or about them, snake stories are very numerous. About the most remarkable snuke story we know is the tail of the joint snake. Some people say this is not a snake story and this is the line of their argument. The tail of the joint snake comes of! and is left by the snake. Therefore, although it is still a tail, yet it is not a snake, and hence cannot be a annuo story, Mince by dctinition a snake story is a tale abthit a kWord^i^S Suffering V Women. But to show you the fallacy of their reasoning, will say: The tail is an entity and you'can - ; not dissolve an entity into i a non-entity. Therefore, it is still a tale and must ho about 1 something. It is, also, the tail of a snake, and if it is not a tale about a snake, it is a tale of a! i snake about something else, which , is an absurdity. The tail of the! rattle-snake is also worthy of men I f Inn ...... I.* t ' wuii! i?iui/ii^ siiuivv sim ii's, since very few peoplo fail to see the point. Another re narkable story uhoot a snake is the tale of the serpent that Ilcrculcs killed, onlv it was; the head and not the tail that was| remarkable that tune. It had nine heads, and every time ller cules cut one off two more grew ' on. Some people douht this, hut ^ wo do not think Hcrculos would have lied about it. A gentleman tells us that hoi saw two snakes engaged in a deadly | struggle. Finally each took tho other by the tail and commenced to swallow. This continued until ; both disappeared, having en' irely swallowed each other. He proves i tho truth of his statement by; drawing a picture of the place, in tho picture no snakes were visible. The same person once saw a large black snake swallow . 1 * m - mmseir in the same way. This! plan of committing suicide would not be practicable with the boys of Tabernacle, on account of the size of their shoes. A Tradesvillo man had been I losing chickens, turkeys, pigs,! etc. One day ho thought be saw. a bunch of feathers sticking out ot an old log and commenced to I investigate. To his surprise he! found the supposed log was a snake unci wheu it was killed he found within ten dozen chickens, twenty geese, seventeen turkeys, j eleven pigs, thtee calves, one goat unci a mule colt. Several of the hens had commenced to lay and one l ad actually brought olT a brood of chickens. To those who are inclined to doubt the veracity of this, l?t it be remembered that South Carolina is the | home of Messrs Matties, McN'eely, Polk and John C Calhoun, the! latter one of the beloved 111111101-: tnl trio. In Virginia a largo black snake killed a polo-cat and tried to swal- j low it. But tho noble "polo" was too strong for him. lie be-came sick, and with ono mighty convulsion the cat was not only) ejected but his snakeship was completely turned wrong side out. i Even then ho couldn't stop and immediately turned back and then inside out again, hik! last seen of ( hirn he was flopping <>(T into the < woods, turning the other side out < .at every jump. This actually oc* 1 curred in Virginia, the home of I Geo Washington, the man who couldn't tell a lie.
