He will preach at Zion 11 am, tomorrow and at Bethel at 3:30 p p m. 4'Citizen" gives some food for thought in a communication in this issue. He is eminently correct in saying the greatest need of Lancaster is a commodious, woll ventilated school building. For several yeara the crowded condition of the pupils in the present building has been unsanitary, and the arrangement of the windows has made the light very trying on many of the children's eyes. A physician recently stated to us that the eyesight of many of the children had become effected from this cause. We are for erecting a building that will be an ornament and a credit to the town. Let other citizens speak out on the matter. The columns of the Ijedger are open to them. The wheels of progress are moving, let no one presume to impede them. MP Have you forgotten to day your subscription to Ledgert Mr. Crockett McMurray left Wednesday for Ashevdle, N C, where ho will spend seVeral weeks, i He stopped over en route a few days at Davidson college. At a moonlight pic?nlc at St I'aul A M E church, Tuesda" night, some negro boys were playing "initiating," when das Wright and Otis Bellj, two of the i number came to words and then to blows when Wright used hia knife stabbing Belk in the shoulder and also io tho sida. The wounds were painful, and had tho one in the side been a little deeper it would have proved fatal. Fire ??t Heath Spring Tho Lancaster Mercantile Co'8 livery stables at Heath Spring were burned about 9 o'clock last Wednesday morning. A quantity ' of roughness and some wagons were lost in the building but the stock and most of tho vehicles were gotten out. The origin of the fire is not known but* is supposed to have been accidental. This is the second time they have been burned out within tho past year or so. The insurance ohly covered about one-fifth of the > loss. . Some Flue Wheat The wheat crop in this county this vear is mii<i < > ^ WM.v? V\/ uv IIIU UCBl ever known. We went over to i the Gregory farm Wednesday and watched tho McCormick reaper and binder at work in a thirtyacre field. It was certainly fine wheat. But for the poor standi* in many parts of the field Mr i Gregory could easily have counted I on 30 bushels to the acre but he i hardly expects to average over 2C i bushels per acre. The part of the ! crop sown in the drill was very ! tine and the poor stands were on II places where the seed were broadicasted. Aside from the wheat i we also saw some tine young corn anl well advanced cotton. Tho crops were clear of grass and i showed that Mr John Adams, tho > manager, is a hustler and underi stands his business. i _ 1 The Vacancies All Filled. 11 The Hoard of Trustees of the Lancaster Graded School met Thursday afternoon and elected Mr H C Davis, a son of Prof K Means Davis of the South Caro Una College, Principal of the school vice Mr T N Rhodes who declinod re election this year. While the seating capacity was large it was impossible to accommodate the crowd. The beginning of the ceremony was an appropriate solo by Madam Chadwick. Tho campaign meeting here today, the opening of the contest of 1900, was well attended. All tho candidates were on the ground and ready for business. The surprise of the day was the tiling of the pledge of A C Jones, the well known Prohibitionist, who enters tho race against Senator Tillman for tho United States j senate. Gov MeSweeney opened the! speeches of the day and gave an accmnt of his stewardship. Ho had many friends in the audience, ' and his defense of the dispensary was strong. Col Hoyt, the champion of prohibition, followed, in n mild and conservative speech, which was well received. Mr Patterson mado a long speech. lie assailed Mr Hoyt's platform and defonded the dispensary law. He severely criticised some of Gov McSwocnoy's record, lie closed his speech amid much applause. Mr Gary's speech was on a high and honoaahle plane. Ho auvocateu local option. The candidates for other State offices all had their say, there being a little word spatting between some of them and slight indications of mud slinging later on. Mr Jones and Senator Tillman both made speeches. The later favored the dispensary as a matter of course but stated there were some things he didn't like about it. As to the candidates for governor Senator Tillman said: "These candidates for governor are all my friends. Col Hoyt is a clean, high-toned, honorable man. He reiused to rule me out of the primary in 1800 when he was chairman of the Democratic party. But the legislature fixes the laws. Have the issues preARRIVflT i. A JL 1JL % A T JLJL X?
