Six Si^ht Seers Were Killed and l oity Injured. i Paris, Apiil 2!>, 8:15 p m. ? I An aeeident within the exposition grounds caused the death of six persons and the injury of about t". A temporary bridge, unable to withstand the Sunday crowd, I >r? ?ke. j The aeeident threw a pall over the happiness of an iinmeuso I throng who had profited by th<? magnificent weather to visit tho exposition. Today's was prob I ably tho record attendance. Not ! merely the interior of the grounds i ; but the precincts were also crowdjed, and the concourse was particI ularly great along the Avenue de SufTren, which forms tho northern boundary of tho grounds. Here is situated a big side show, the Celestial (ilobe. A foot bridge, ? n which the finishing touches were being put today, crosses the Avenue de SutFren, onnccting the sideshow with the exhibition. i It was constructed of wood, with a stucco facade and with a plaster-1 I made tower at each end. Strangely enough, the bridge had been condemned only this' morning as unsafe by the exhibi-i lion authorities. The public was, therefore, not allowed to go I upon the structure, and in this way a disaster even more terrible than that which occurred was averted. 1 he gay crowd was passing along the avenue and some . hundred or more persons were walking beneath the bridge when suddenly an ominous crash wa** heard liefore those underneath o old turn aside the structure fell with a fearful crash, burying MiMirlv r.n a ciimii .if ii? Almost immediately the crowd attacked the debris in an cfl'ort to release those lying he neath. The workmen within the grounds who had witnessed the accident, the police and the re publican guard*, together wit i ijuitc a numher of soldiers, join ed in the rescue work. The promenadcrs forgot their Sunday attire and covered themselves with dirt in tearing away the rubbish with their hands. Wooden beams and p< ?l??s wore brought from the half-finished building* nearby and were used as levers to rnisf the fallen mass. The victims lirst recovered were mostly the injure !, the dead bein?* l'ouud later beneath tho centre of the structure. Messengers were dispatched to lirin^ lirenien and sappers with their equipments, and the lirst body was found after a quarter of an hour's frantic la* bor. It was that of a little ^rirl, about 7 years old, whose head was horribly crushed. Victim after victim was brought to Ii_rht until u row of six mutilated j corpse* had hoof) placed upon the si lewalk and nearly 40 other persons, some badly and other-. less sciiou.il y injured, had heen car-, ried in ambulances or driven to the hospitals. A family, composed of father, 1 mother and two girls, narrowly escaped destruction. The parentwho happened to be a little ahead, had gone under t ho bridge, the I children following just at tliei moment of the collapse. The parents wcje killed, but the children sprang hack and escaped with a few scratches. A cyclist had his wheel smashed, but himself escaped unhurt. The dead are three men, two women and one child. 4:50 a 111.?Some of the injured have since died at the hospital. The corrected list shows that nine were killed and nine injured, the injuries being mostly compound fractures of the leg. One | woman and a child are still unidentified. *100 it KW a it i) $nmi.
