LIEUT. STOKES GIVES HIS

Last night Lieut Marcus B

collector of the port at Cardenas,
Cuba, arrived in the city. He
leaves this morning for Green

and then proceeds to Now York
to return to Cardenas via a gov

that his stay in Columbia, where

lie talked interestingly to a
representative of The State about
Cuba and the Cubans. Among
other things he said: "I went to
the island a year and a half ago
and have opportunities to observe
the people and their characterise
ties. The popular idea is that the
Cubans are a very excitable people.
1 have not observed anything
specially of this character among
them. The typical Cuban countrvman
is just the very opposite.
They are good, steady workers
both on their plantations and on
the public roads and works that
are being constructed. They are
the most temperate people 1 have
ever seen, and that as a people,
too. It is the policy to give every
position available in the island to
native Cubans, preference always
being given to Cuban officers and
sonuers. l Hey are taking the
places in the tekgraph and postal
and other services, and seem to
he filling them satisfactorily. In
all cases it is impossible to secure,
of course, the best men on first
effort, but those obtained are, as
a rule, doing their work most
satisfactorily.
"The color line a noug the better
classes, as far as I can judge,
is just us sharp as it is in this
country Socinlly the people are
on a par with those found in our
own country.
"There is at present a clamoring
and discontinued element in
Cuba, but this element is not a
part of the class of people I have
just referred to ? the sober, thinking
people.

The Diicovcrcr of Swamp-Root at Work in
H.'o Laboratory.
There Is a cHsea.ee pievailing In this
country most dangerous because so deceptive.
Many sudden deaths arc caused by
it?heart disease, pneumonia, heart failure
or apoplexy arc often the result of kidney
disease. If kidney trouble is allowed to advance
the kidney-poisoned blood will attack
the vital organs, or the kidneys themselves
break down and waste away cell by cell.
Then the richness cf the blood?the albumen
?leaks out and the sufferer has Bright'3
Disease, the worst form of kidney trouble.
Dr. Kilmer's Swamp-Root the new discovery
is the true specific for kidney, bladder
and urinary troubles. It has cured thousands
of apparently hopeless car es, after all other
efforts have failed. At druggists in fifty-cent
and dollar sizes. A sample bottle sent free *
by mail, also a book telling about SwampRoot
and its wonderful cures. Address
