l'HE LEDGER. ThiHow S. Carter, K D l TO K AND MANAQ K K. SATURDAY FEBRUARY" 10, 1000. Ki?jht Cents Cotton. Eight cents cotton ! We hoped it would come before Christmas, but. the English spinners let Neill foolQthem longer than we thought he could Now it has come at last. Good people out on the farms, do hare some foresight Wo have figured out to you in plain figures that a nine million bale eron? I 450 pounds to the bale ? will pay you throe hundred and twenty four million dollars* $324,000,000) at H cents while u twelve million bale crop at 5 cents wjll pay you two hundred and seventy millions ($270,000,000 ) You will clear the difference?fiftv four million dollars?by keeping the crop at nine millions. The Almighty helped you this season by cutting down the yield. Now help your* selves by keeping it down. If you will reduce the acreage but intensify so aa to increase the > icld to the acre you will all be in a fair way to get rich, for the stock will be low and another nine million crop will put prices to nine or ten cents. ? Greenville News. Spot cotton is now at 10 1 16 cents in Liverpool. Carry the news to Neill, shown to bo the Muhdi of the market.?The State, 0th inst. HESTER'S ANALYSIS. It Blake, ,1 r, announced that terms had been made witn ferti U izor dealers whereby fertilizers may be had by the farmers of this county at an advance of 10 per cent on last year's prices. This is tho end sought by the farmers, and it may therefore l?e presumed that the tight on the trust is at an end. Sold by Crawford Bros* Druggists. The Legislature. 'j Columbia, S C, Feb 6.?The ^ whole day in the senate was spent in discussing the amendments to si the Jim Crow car bill but all amendments had not been acted ? on up to adjournment. As it . ir stood then the bill required railroads to run two first class coach- . is es, one for colored and one for ^ white passengers, and a second class coach which may bo divided into two compartments. The first class fare shall bo 3 cents and second 2? cents. Tae bill as presented to the senato provided only for a first ?lass fare of 3 cents, a1 abolishing the second class fare. M The house fought all day on the dispensary bill and only got ^ over one line, section 2, which reads, "the State hoard of con- 11 trol ik hereby abolished." That * ' one line was adopted and was the ^ tight of the day. Although there was a lot of talk, when the I * vote catno twenty five members j11 voted for, and seventy seven j * voted against the present board j' The present board got some hard F raps and when the question of n what to put in their place came up ! ^ there was wide difference and the n house adjourned, pending settle- * inent. t Columbia, S C, Feb 7.?-The ^ State board of control met today ^ and transacted routine business. ^ The resignation of Douthit as t commissioner was accepted, tint he was requested to act on until his successor is chosen. With little opposition the sen- ' ate passed the bill to establish a ^ reformatory in connection with A the penitentiary. The feature of the debate was Senator Archer's v strong speech in favor of the bill a and his denunciation of inhunmni- ^ ty to convicts. The bill provides I for the establishment of a reformatory on the Heed State farm . ? for convicts under 16 years old. The senate killed the Ragsdale cotton seed adulteration bill as well as a committee substitute for it. The house spent all the morn- . ing on the dispensary bill. It I was almost completed. The house \ voted to have mem tiers of the county board selected by the State board by and with the consent of members of the house and snnnte or a majority. Several other schemes were suggested. i The house took a recess to hear I a magnificent address by Dr J L M Currv when it was considering the constable section. By a large vote the house voted down a proposition that the counties bclect their constables. The | bill has practically gone through I the house. The house declined | to concur in the senate amend- . ments on the Jim Crow car bill ' and it goes to a conference. If the bill passes as amended in the senate it plays the mischief, the railroad interests contend. Now bills cannot l>e presented in the house after today. The appropriation vill l>e ready for consideration today. Columbia, S C, Feb 8.?The senate today immediately aftor assembling, proceeded to the house where a joint session was held for the purpose of electing trustees for the Citadel, Clemson and the colored college. The elections re* suited as follows: Citadel visitors ?C S Gadsen, Charleston; Bishop Ellison Capers, Columbia; J J Lucas, Darlington, E M Blythe, Greenville; W W Ivewis, York. There was no opposition. Clemson trustees?A T Smyth, Charleston, to succeed the late Gov Ellerbe; R T Redfern, Chesterfield; Jesse Hardin, Chester, and J E Tindal, Clarendon. No f opposition. ^ Colored college at Orangeburg ? D J Brabham, Clarendon, and W R Lowman, Orangeburg. The conference committee on ic Jim Crow car hill reported nit it could not apree and the ill will have to po to a commit?e of free conference. The first hour of the house seson was taken up in the debate 11 the proposition to appropriate 35,000 to Winthrop for buildip dormitories. The house voted > pive the whole amount. This separate from the appropriation >r ordinary runninp expenses, ho vote was 77 to 20. Five Mill Levy This Year.
