THE LEDGER. S. fari* i, EDITOR AND MANAGER. SATURDAY DECEMBER, 2, 1899. PROGRESSIVE UNION. Another Mill to be Erected at Onco With 16,000 Spindles. Union Times. "Through the success of one little cotton mill Union, which was about ihe slowest town in South Carolina, is now become one of the liveliest. Witness the . siv in which its ueoole are now ?' I I ? * rallying to a new mill enterprise. Union will have four cotton fac tories aggregating more spindles and looms than Charlotte?indeed, one of its mills has more than Charlotte's dozen. With such a start Union is assumed of a distinguished future. It is already an example to every town tn the State." The above is clipped from Tuesday's State. It is a fact that Union has set an example in the cotton mill building business taut is worthy of emulation by other towns. Yes, Union used to be a slow town, in fact considered one of the dead towns of the State, and would probably now have rag weeds in lront of the hotel and hog wallows in Main street hud it not been for such energetic men as T C Duncan and tho other promoters of tho original mill coming to the front. A second mammoth mill was soon built, anil there are now 80,000 spindles humming in town. By next spring there will be another mill at Buffalo, three miles from town, which will eventually run 80,000 spindles, and now comes another of 15,000 spindles to be erected at once in Uniou, making nearly 200,000 spindlesf'?r Union. Thu latest mill enterprise is engineered by Mr J no A Fnnt, one of our most prominent, leading and sub stautial ci'izens. Mr Funt is a man of influence in lTnion and enjoys the confidence of our people geuernlly, and the fact that he is at the headw of this move - I ment is a guarantee of its success. There is no use of our singing Mr Fant's praises, for all know him to be a man of business ca pacity and integrity of character. As an evidence of this confidence in his ability he, in a week's time, has secured nearly s? 100,000 of the $200,000 capitaliza , lion of his mill. This was all so-; imen mi. nwniu n nil llll It: I'llDI'l. With T C Duncan and J no A Funt at the head of the cotton mills of Union, we advise all who can do so to load up with cotton mill stock. l'hey will make it, pay if it in in the bounds of pos- J nihility. Both can point to a sue I cessful business career. Charles Wilson Guilty of Murder. I Special to The State. Charleston, Nov 28.?Charles Wilson, tho negro who killed Private Godfrey of tho South Carolina buttery of Heavy Artillery, was today convicted of murder and will tomorrow be sentenced to be hanged. The evidence was all one way, and proved that the crime was an atrocious one. God frey was rebuking the negro for cursing in the presence of ladies when he was suddenly shot and killed instantly. Wilson endeavored to plead innocence, aod wanted to charge a companion with the crime, but the evidence was too strong. Ho is the second negro to be sentenced to be hang* cd at this term of the court. Kdncata Your Hawaii VMh CM??r?u. Candy Cathartic, cure eonatipatlnn forever Ste. uSc. If C. Q.
