rHK LEDGER. Thurlow S. Carter, ki>i roit and manager RATl'KDAV, NOV KM UEll 4, 1S09. Ingratitude and What Has Come of it. Very naturally a recent editorial remark in The Greenville, S C, New-, copied in this paper at the time, to the effect that the South has put itself out of business in Federal politics, having thrown awav the alliance which made it Strom* and aggressive, has attracted considerable attention. The Charleston News and Courier, commenting uoon it. savs that it O I I W * will ho years before the South will merit the recognition which was gladly given to it by President Cleveland, and says that lthe.o has been nothing in the political history of this country tc compare with the base ingratitude of the Southern people in theii treatment of him." The Rich mond Times agrees with this ant: adds that when the apostles of the new 'dispensation got possession ol the party and formed what tho> called the New Democracy, the} turned their hacks upon the Dem ocratic leaders of the North, whr ha 1 stood so gallantly by the South in nil her troubles siuce the war, scorned them, denouncer them, and boasted that the party had repudiated them forever. Notice was served on the Northern Democrats that tho New Democracy would have nothing more tc do with them, and when Mr Bryan w ent North he gave out that ho was going into the "enemy'i country." In place of these noble Democrats of the North the party took to its bosom the Populists and free silver Republicans of the W est and it was given out that the West and the South were allied against all the powers of darkness in the North and Hast. It was a sorry exchange for the South. lt was an exhihtion of base ingratitude : nd the South will suffer for it. i no rsoutn lias su tiered for it, it i.s suffering now, in public opinion and in self-respect.? Charlotte Observer. Dr Grier's Will Refused Probate. Abbeville Press and Banner. Within the last two months throe improperly executed wills have been presented for probate in the otlice of the probate judtje of Al?beville county. 1 The will of Dr \V M Grior was not admitted to probate be cause there were <>iily two subscribing witnesses.'] 2 The will of Mrs Ferguson, wife of .J C Ferg 'son, was refused probate for the same reason. The will of Dr .J W Thomas was signed in the presence of only two witnesses, but in the codieil tho will itself was recognized and the codicil was signed by three witnesses. This act apparently remedied the will, but when the witnesses were confronted with the affidavit they declined to subscribe to it on the ground that they did not sign it in tho presence of each other.
