Greenvill News. f -A Bristol to Camden by a Broad Gauge. A Special to The State. Chester, Sept 2ft?Some days ago mention was made in your local columns of the proposed scheme of making the Carolina and Northwestern railroad, operating between Chester and Lenoir, a broad gauge and a through line I from Bristol, Tenn., to Camden, S C. Your correspondent has confirmation of this scheme from a most reliable source, but is not permitted at present to give any j names. It iq, however, cerain that wealth and brains aro behind this enterprise and a strong syndicate I of northern capitalists has already ! been organized, which will remain independent of either the Seaboard lor Southern railroads. Tho gaps between Collettsville and Cran berry and ('ranberry and Bristol will all ho filled tip with a standard range road bed. The widening of tho narrow gauge beds will bo commenced at the Tennessee end and proceed down to Hickory, N C., hen the work will very easily be compled to Cheater and a broad gauge will be graded on to Can), den in order to get a seacoast con nection. It is now estimated that the entire woi k will be completed by .January 1, 1901 This will be a most important railroad to South Carolina, and the benefits Chester will receive from it will bo incalculable. The Southern has for a long time maintained very high rates on coal from the Tennessee mines bv which coal could be distributed through this State, but with the Bristol, Iamoir, Chester and Cum den line, passing directly through the bluefiold coal districts, the i Southern w ill run up against a strong competitor and the result , will be cheaj>er coal to ull parts of , South Carolina. On the 110 miles of the present , narrow gauge theri is an average 'of one cotton mil! to every station, and there is an average of one station to every six miles. Be i sides this the new line between 1 here and Camden will touch the great water power on the Catawbi i river, and just as certatn as nighl i follows day will the development of this valuable property follow the building of the lower end There has been a government sur vev made of this property and i ! has been found that 30,00( dormant horsepower lies then . I undeveloped. This, of course I > means that the cotton mills o . Chester and Lancaster now opera> ing and to be built, will be rui ! by the electric power in this de ! | velopment. 41 The promoters of this ron< WE HAVE NOT ?L _ ___ .
