A Horse .lumps From a Trestle 1 Forty Feet High Last night, about 8 o'clock, when the train from Chester to Lancaster was about half a mile i the other sido of Fishing Creek, i in Chester county, coming in the i direction of Lancaster, a horse 1 hitched to a top buggy dashed sud- < denly on the Railroad track in ] front of the engine. Engineer 1 Wall, who was at the throttle, i stopped the train. The horse kept ' on down the track. The engineer proceeded cautiously with the train, keeping a sharp lookout 1 ahead. On Hearing Fishing Creek ( ho sighued the horse and buggy on the trestle about 70 feet from the West bank. The train was 1 again stopped and the train crew ^ walked out on the trestle to sea, what could lie done to remove the j obstruction so that the train could puss over. But they did not have, long to wait for the horse in his efforts to extricate himself from \ ids perilous situation toppled head j foremost down to the ground, a distance of forty feet. I lis head struck the ground first and his neck was broken. V\ ben found the head was twicted under the! shoulder and the buggy was scat- ! tered in pieces all around him. The horse and buggy belonged rr^ r5 j to l>r .lesse A Clifton of the Fort Lawn section of Chester County. The Doctor was making a professional call at the homo of Mr. Finch. He left his horse in the, yard unhitched. The approaching train frightened him and he ran ( away. The horse and buggy were, worth $4200. The Railroad Co., it would seem, is in no wise responsible, and but for Engineer Walls watchfulness and care, there might have been a serious wreck . i on the roud resulting in the loss of uany lives. Kind ot'Merchant to PatrnuiMtt You never heard of a closefisted, stingy, penurious merchant; advertising in a newspaper. Such a merchant has an idea that he must make the regulation profit; on every article, he sells and he'll do it <*r bust. He never puts his prices down in printer's ink less ho should miss an opportunity | sometimes to make a "loetlej more" than the regulation profit. ! He grasps at big profits like a , pointer snapping at a blue-bnttio fly, and he will toll you that he , doesn't advertise because he \v ould J . have t'? add an additional profit on his goods to pay for the ad., and doubtless, if he could he induced to extend a courteous invitation to the public to visit his store, ho would have little enough business about him to pay lor tin; ad in that way. But, how is it with ' the advertiser ? You always find him an energetic, clever, liberal, big hearted, progressive business fellow, who is satisfied with stu til profits knowing that more money is made l>v quick sales than by big profits and slow sales or no sales He would rather turn his' goods over ten times a year at a ' profit of only one per cent each time than to hold them until they liecomo shop worn and rotten Auiting for a profit of 10 per cent. The people are not fools. They understand how a merchant can spend big money advertising, sell goods cheaper than the stingy old cuss who tries to do business next door to him without advertising, and get rich ten times as quick. During the seventeen years W Ganson did business here he spent about $10,000.00 ail j vertising. No competitor could undersell him and his low prices built him up a trade from Chester, Kershaw, Chesterfield and Union counties to say nothing about his trade in Lancaster county. The jieople got bargaius, Ganson got rich and the newspapers, the best institutions for | *b?- upbuilding of any town or country, thrived. The merchant with business qualifications al ways advertises and the business' farmer always watches the advertising columns.
