GREAT STEEL ARCHES FELL' LIKE CARDS. ; Nine Men Killed, Many Injured. I Direct Oiusc of the Accident Net Ascertained Financial Loss Will Not Fxeced *2o,0U0. Chicago, Auir 2*?Twelye stce ' arches, each weiuhing Jl.'J tons, ! which were to have supported the! superstructure of the coliseum^ building in com so of erection on Wabash avenue, between l-ii-i teenth and Sixteenth streets, fell 1 to the ground late this afternoon, j As a result of the accident nine men are dead, two missing, four j' fatally injured and nine badly | hurt. All of the 12 arches were stand. 1 ing, the 12th and Inst having been ' completed today. The immense ''traveler" or derrick, which has been used in11 ' the erection of the arches, has , | 1 been removed, and the agents of I i I ^ I the bridge company were account mg their work as practically coin- j pie ted when suddenly and without ' the slightest warning, the arch ^ last put in place fell over against J the one next to it. The weight i . ! . | was too much for this, and it i gave way, crashing against the 1 thir<1 and then one by one the t great steel span fell over to the< south, precisely in the same manner as a number of cards would j fall. Nearly all the men who * were killed were at work on top of the arches, 40 feet above tho ( ground. Most of them were killed outright by the awful nature of j their injuries. The skulls of the unfortunates were crushed into I 11 shapeless masses; their limbs were cut off as if by a monster knife, j and they were mangled beyond recognition. The crash was heard I i blocks distant, and the structure fell, leaving the walls practically < uninjured. '( That more men were not killed ' and injured was a miracle. Fully!' 15 men were at work covered by the space of the arches as they 11 fell. A number of the men jumped | into small excavations, of which , there are many in the ground , beneath the steel works, and were , saved from the great masses of < steel that crushed down over 1 them. ' The direct cause of the accident' is not known, and it will probably be several days before it is determined. One theory is that a shifting' of sand beneath the foundation ' eatised tho collapse of the first arch, which brought all the others to t lie ground. The management has decided to at once replace tho arches, and proceed with the immediate com plot i? >n of tho building and have it, ready for the national conventions next summer. The loss will not 1 exceed $25,000. j j The worst feature of the noci | i dent was the loss of life.
