A Paying Business. lie Stute. A good deal has recently been lid about the profits made by DUthern cotton mills, the sums eing large enough to bo consided more than encouraging, even mpting. But profitable as are 10 cotton mills in the south, the ?st paying industry in connection ith cotton is the cotton seed oil isiness. Just what these oil ills make cannot bo told, for the anagers do not talk upon that ibject very freely, and besides a lod many of the concerns are in trust. A dividend of 25 {>er rit is nothing unusual and upon >od authority it is learned tkat mie of the South Carolina oil ills last year reaped as much as 5 per cent. The average is to 3 ton ml hot ween these two exeniew. This '<* good money out f a business that is not in operaon half the year, though the exjnse and tire risk are not inconderable. if it were not for the cotton ted oil business the farmer would >t be able to make anything at I out his cotton at the present rices. Before the war the cotton >ed not used for seeding was good ily for fertilization of land and (intense quantities were wasted, ow all that is changed, and all irts of the seed are utilized. The nt itself has a value, bringing : 8 cents per |iound as a substiite for a low grade cotton. The ills make a much used cattle food id out of the 4 4meat" the oil is ressed. The hulls are also utilimI for fuel and the ashes are also ilued as a fertilizer, especially ?r tobacco lands, Iteing rich in itash. The oil is extensively uployed not only as a substitute >r lard but in the making of soap ashing powder, cosmetics and le adulteration of lard, olive oil id sperm oil. The cotton seed eal is used t>oth as a cattle food id a fertilizer and in tho former mracter it is very popular and ids a large sale. No part of tho ed is now wasted and new uses e constantly lieing found for the oducts. The latest employment 1 the meal is in place of cotton aste for {lacking the axle boxes ! railroad cars. The annual output of seed is aced at 4,000,000 tons, of which ro-thirds is used for othei thon eding purposes, 1,500,000 tons iding the way to the oil mills, ue ton will give 45 gallons of ude cotton seed oil and 800 lbs ! cotton seed oil cake. Accord g to th? Southern Field, from hich these figures are taken, lere have been organized in the sith since the beginning of this ^ar sixty new companies with a tal capitalization of over 2,500,)0 and a daily capacity of 2,400 >ns. It is the most thriving inistry in the south and it is well i note that the largest mills in lis section are located in Columa. Hut the business is destined > extend, since the demand for! le various products of these mills growing. Last year theexpor-j ,tion of cotton seed oil alone j >ached u value of $10,138,000. ( Hest of all, however, it is an I idustry of which the south has a onopoly of the right sort, for le south is the place where the I mil's must be built.
