THE LEDGER. |; Th irlow S. Carter, ( ? i EDITOR AND MANAGER. . ? | WEDNESDAY, JLI.Y 12, 1899. | | For The Ledger. The Summer School. Mil Kditok:?The Summer School now in progress ut this place deserves patronage and em couragement There has been enrolled about thirty-live scholars ?teachers who are teaching school t in the county. The school is eonducted by Dr Harrison, professor of Knglish literature at Davidson College, N. C., and by I'rof Hambo of the Graded School at Sumter in this Stale. These two men are certainly scholars of a high grade, and are well versed in the most approved methods of teaching. The teacher of this county who is not in attendance, and who has thus preferred to aviod hiins If or herself of this great opp? rt tin it y of heco liing more skilled in learning and in the best mode of imparting instruction, is standing in his or her own light. This is an age of progress, .and the facilities of acquiring knowledge, and of acquiring the art of imparting instruction, in ttie march of general progress, are as marked and conspicuous, as they are in other fields of knowledge. Every teacher ought to embrace this great opportunity, and reap the benefits offered. It will very likely he the means, in the future, of securing more easily good positions as teachers, and lead to practical success in the business life of a teacher. Every teacher ought to he prompt in attendance, and carry out, with willing deter initiation, every suggestion of these scholarly instructors. Many of the county teachers have never before had such an opportunity of mental improvement, and may not in the future he so favored. The writer has visited the school in its practical working, and has been most favorably impressed with the good work that is being accomplished. The in stuctors are both men of finished education, and appear to be most conscientious in their efforts to achieve good results. And I would like to say, for the encouragement of the school, that it is composed of good mater in 1. The members of the school are hard at work ? making a favorable impression on all visitors who are interested in the success of the school and the prospects is that good results will follow. Persons of good behavior, who are fond of letters, and interested in education, would enjoy visitin?r the school, and would receive benefit in icturn. A Visitor. ( For The Ledger. VAN WYCK ITEMS. Crops are growing rapidly and farmers are pushing the cultivation of them, but it will bo son.e time in August before thev j r? ? through as ii good deal of the crop was late in planting. I louse-keepers are complaining of the scarcity of vegetables and fruits. A failure of the fruit crop and vegetable garden is felt, and brings forth much lamentation from cook and provider < f the culinary department of the household. A number of our Van YVyck people attended Six Mile church last Sunday afternoon and heard an impressive sermon, delivered by Dr. Thorn well of Fort Mill. On Sunday night our people had an interesting talk in Van Wyck church on China and the missionary work there by Ilev. 31 r. Lucas, who happened to l>e (topping in the neighborhood. Mr Lucas sjient seven years in Jhina as a missionary and had to return to the United States to re *ain his lost health. Ho with a | party of live others are traveling by private conveyances going to | the ISluo Ridge mountains. Miss Maud Inez Tillman has been elected teacher of Cwreton's Springs school in District No. t>. and will begin teaching next Monday. The trustees and patrons of Van Wyck school met at the school house last Saturday and again on M onday to discuss their ru'es and regulations and elect a teacher. They eleleeted Rev R K Mood teacher, but wo have not learned whether they a lopted the regu'ations. They will open school Monday, .Inly v24th for a summer term. Mr and Mrs C S Massey of Waxhaw visited Mr R 11 Massey and family last Sunday and Monday Mrs .1 A Ilyatt and children visited relatives and friends at Rock Hill and York county last week. Mrs Sallio Stewart and son, Walter are visiting at Rock llill. Mr W W Christenhury has successfully removed a cancer from Mr J L Tillman's hand. Mr Tillman feels very much relieved and is well pleased with Mr. Christen bury's work and recommends him to any one who may ho suffering or bothered with a cancer. Mr Christerbury has never failed in any case he has undertaken, and has a wonderful preparation that is worth a great deal to guf fcring humanity. Mr. Christen-bury is a very modest man and has never given his preparation an extended notice to the public, consequently many who are suffering, are ignorant of this wonderful remedy. If any one should wish to learn something of the man and preparation, if they address W SY Christenhury, Concord, N C., their inquiries will have prompt attention. Oitimis. ? Mr. Editor: The recent show> have called otF the atmosphere osiderably, and, our people ve go no to work 1 ight. Our town presents quite a live-, business place at present. Our enterprising and popular lysiciun, Dr .1 E W llaile, broke ound yesterday, and the Georn buggies are kept busily enged rolling the dirt to clear the ly for the erection of a main-, oth building in which there will s (ittcd up four handsome store ioms, which will be, when collided, occupied by the live and ide awake business firm of the armors Banking & Mercantile ompatiy, of this place. The l)r as very fortunate in getting such ssees to occupy his line rooms, id they were equilly as fortuite in getting a person who ould build rooms suitable for ieir increasing business. Kerinw is making a great many tanges just now, Mr Moore, the irber, had to move his barber lop, to make room for the new lildings, having occupied a hiding which was on the lot here the new building is being ccted. He moved into t lie 10m occupied by Mr O Floyd, ir insurance agent, and Mr Floyd oved down on south end in a torn in the Law Range, or the em pie of .Justice. Our Law ange is quite a popular place, itwithstanding it is situated lite a distance from the business irticn of the town. Rent is leap and ice water is handy. Lee swell's ice house is in close proxaity to the building. Lee sells e cheap, and furnishes ice water ee. Harry has had several cases be?re the Squire this week, in hich ho made a good score every me. I think if his business connucs to increase until fall as it is for the past few weeks he will et fat. , I don't think our school truses have had any meetings lately. re still have no principal and achers elected to serve the enling term, but I am pro <1 to iy, I believe we will have a liool, and that the patrons will it a principal that will please a ajority of them. 1 hope they ill, any way. There is one ling that 1 can't understand ?out this school trustee business, id that is tl is, that a man would ant to hold on to an office that id no money in it, though some jople may think, thabit will give em a stepping stone to a higher ace, or it may be that they link by holding an office of that ind they would be enabled to ve some of their friends a nosi nn as teacher in the school. 1 inllv think such is the case here, hope not, any way. Humor is current on the streets mt our Intendent contemplates ^signing his otlice as Intendent of 10 town in the near future 1 >n't know whether this is so or )t. Citizkn.
