THE LEDGER. Tliurlow S. Carter, EDITOR AND MANAGER. WEDNESDAY, MAY 24, 1899. [For The Ledger. VAN WYCK ITEMS. We ore needing rain, and the wonther grumbler is sending forth complaints to elicit sympathisers in his illusive distress. News is scarce and our imagina uuu ciouueo, out \ iiti Wyck is still in the ring and kept in n whirl, and now and then almost sent off in a tangent by real wide )i"*ake gossijiers. They seem to take an especial delight in getting up a stir, almost bordering on the sensational. But this will continue as long as envy, prejudice and malice, occupy charity's place in the human heart. Mad dogs have made their up pearar.ee in the Six Mile and Twelve Mile creek neighborhoods and a number of do*;* bitten. The I ~ canine tribe is being reduced in numbers, and a stray dog treads on dangerous grounds, and has a poor show in hunting bones these days. People can't be too careful in protecting themselves ugumsi me norior of hydrophobia. 'Nickle Jim" came over from Rock Hill last Friday evening ami remained until Sunday. He don't think Rock Hill is so much hotter than Van Wyok and may return to the "land of Jackson" some time in the future. He does not report for the newspapers now as he did while at Van Wyck, but his time is taken up in cultivating and looking after niekles. Nickle Jim, .Jr., he says, is the prettiest baby in Rock Hill. Mr. and Mrs. R H Massey spent last Sunday with Mrs. Massey's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fudge near Fort Lawn. Misses Sugar Tillman and Sue Yoder spent a couple of days at Lancaster the tirt>t of the week ? partly on business and partly on pleasure. They brought away a few of the bargains, that ttie Lancaster merchants are giving to their customers for the "bri ght iron." Constable \V .1 Crenshaw nmde a business trip to Charlotte, last week. He finished up collecting delinquent taxes, without placing any levies, which speaks well for both himself and the people. Mr. .1 K Williamson, foreman on section No. (J. C. & N. went to Atlanta ?i"d Villa Rica last Sunday to visit relatives and ( to attend to some business. Mr. j llartis of Harmony is hero relieving him. That in the death of Mrs. Galloway this church has lost a devout, lovely christian character. One who was always ready to lend a sustaining hand whenever duty called, and one, too, who delighted, in a modest way, to soothe the couch of the sick, and cheer the drooping spirits of the disconsolate, like the delicate violet screening itself from pomp and show anil rather inclined to manifest its presence by the sweetness of its fragrance. Her imposing personality in the primo of young womanhood, and her deeds of kindness, will linger long with us, a soft radiance, oven as the afterglow of a summer sunset falls around us like a halo of peace. 2nd. That the secretary of this conference furnish the husband of the deceased with a copy of this preamble and of these resolutions, after copying tho same in his minutes; and that he is authorized to request the publication of the same in the Southern Christian Advocate and in each of tho count} newspapers.
