THE LEDGER. "f , foi Thurlow S- Carter, mt - sej EDITOR AND MANAGER. WKDNKSDAY, MAY 17, 1899. f(), ?i ' roi [For The Lodger. tin ^The Annual May Fionie. ^r< I I O, dear! what a delicious odor J tlu steams from tho kitchen yonder > no just think I shall step in. and see, dii when, heboid, what a confusion act of eggs, sugar and hotter, mingled on with Hour, milk and flavoring, pit The home keeper hurries, first to hu the stove, then to tho tahle and wi hack to the safe, lifting out an tin immense boiled ham, next a dei - i At l i__ i L!1 _ u ..; lignum case, intra a pan oi nice "stickeys." Custards, sandwiches, pies, chicken, etc., are treated in like manner, until the cupboard fairlv groans beneath its ' 1M burden of good things. Iac This is a slight description of, 801 not only one, hut almost every ai< kitchen in Lancaster. Kershaw, I ?>! Chester and Fairfield counties. On the first Saturday in May, long, even before King Solomon -(! shows his cheery face, the people u 1 are astir, preparing for the picnic which comes but once a year. The girls, take unusually long to j rei n nke their toilet, for their hair j must he curled, and arranged in I the latest style, while there are j rutlles to he fixed, ribbons t< I loop and flowers to be pinned hero j and there. When, nearly a box i of powder and paper of pins have \ been used, then it is, she declares, ! ; herself real pretty and ready to 1 go. Every conceivable mode of travel may lie seen, some in car- ! riagcs, wagons, horse back bicycling and even walking. It was largely attended?gay groups representing the separate towns and counties, especially, will we mention the youth and intelligence of Lancaster, which added much to the merry throng, also two of ^ Camden's gallant young men, who, notwithstanding their long fatigueing journey, never seemed to tiro of assisting the fair maidens over the stony paths, and Waxhaw, the old historic hirth-plaee of Andrew .Jackson sent forth some of her nohle daughters. i The beautiful were present to borrow new beautv from the 1 . 1 ' magnificent scenes and it was quite unnecessary to ask the ever ready question, "Have you enjoyed die pic-nic?" for the oumor ons bright eves and merry faces bespoke untold volumns of secret pleasure. Many hidden treasures , of tilt; heart are innocently pre- ^ sented to view through those same little windows and some I certain couples had better have a care lest others, besides the pie- j nickers, guess their secret. j \ My friends, have, of course, | experienced unbounded pleasure i hut there are those who expe- ? rienced both that, and hounded pleasure, or pain one, f<?r in en <leav< ring to gain the summit of those rocky cliffs, would loose . Tr their footing and tumble or slide to the bottom. It was fun to the t ?r lookers on, but, 1 imagine, not jl(l much foi the participants. The l>i day was indeed delightful?heaven ,fM having kindly spread a veil of clouds to protect us from the sun rel and softly fanned the heat away, rei with the Catawba's gentle breeze. o The delicate laurel and heauti- \ti fill lillies were in full bloom and deeply ensconced in their rich r,>l green foliage are emblems of tri purity, sweetness and innocence. <te While gazing in admiration, I n<1 wondered if it wore in my power, . to grasp such a degree of perfec wi tion. I can but lift up my hands m) and hope, that I, yea, every one HHI may shed an influence so pure and sweet, as the delicate aroma, which comes from theae little jdeasures. When the shadows / IKLu evening begau to fall, many 3(1 fare wells were said and the I jrry-makers diapered for their karate hones. Now, their faces are not so ight and fresh as in the morn, i r climbing over the hills and | cks has taken the alacrity from sir steps and the rosy bloom ' >m their cheeks. What has become of 4'Among 3 Hills?" 1 regret, veryunuch, t having had the honor of adig his name to my list of new . piaintunces but hope to do so " the fourth of July. Tho great j 5-nic is past and gone forever, | t a pleasant memory lingers ^ tli us still to link with that of 3 next. Kkfi.ector. i c May 17, 1899. 1 ( A Chance for Old Ladies.
